Philip Seymour Hoffman Dies of Drug Overdose at 46, Hollywood Reacts to his Death

Academy award winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead Sunday, at his Manhattan apartment. Police suspect drug overdose.

The 46-year-old 'Capote' actor's friend found him unresponsive with a heroin-filled needle in his arm. He then called the police. The officials reached Hoffman's house at the West Village around 11 a.m., police sources told FoxNews.com.

According to the police officials, investigation is on to determine whether Hoffman got the more potent type of heroin that has been responsible for a number of deaths in the past two weeks.

The substance is a combination of heroin and fentanyl, an opiate used to ease pain in cancer patients, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Police are "looking at if (Hoffman) had the bad batch going around," the source told Fox News.

Hoffman's family issued a statement asking people to keep him in their thoughts and prayers. "We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone. This is a tragic and sudden loss and we ask that you respect our privacy during this time of grieving."

Hoffman was shooting for 'Happyish,' a Showtime series. However, sources say the production is "unlikely" to continue. "It is hard to imagine a way in which it could go on," the source continued. "His role would have to be recast and there weren't any other actors in serious consideration aside from Philip. If the show does move forward, the premiere would be delayed as pilot would need to be reshot," a source told E! Online.
