Ubisoft has confirmed the "Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag" DLC "Freedom Cry" will be available as a standalone download, meaning you won't need the bas game to run the additional content.
According to Ubisoft's official blog, the download will be available stating Feb. 18 for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 for $14.99.
"We decided to release Assassin's Creed Freedom Cry as a standalone game for both fans and newcomers to the Assassin's Creed universe," Tony Key, Ubisoft senior vice president of sales and marketing, said in a statement. "Assassin's Creed Freedom Cry delivers key elements of an Assassin's Creed game, including a new hero, new environments and new weapons."
In the "Freedom Cry" DLC, you play as Edward Kenway's quartermaster Adéwalé, a former slave turned pirate who eventually joins the Creed. Adéwalé fights for the freedom of the "most brutal slavery in the West Indies," according to Ubisoft's blog. Gamers will raid the plantations and sail the seas for treasure in order to help the Maroons in their rebellion.
The "Assassin's Creed" developers have been holding over fans with DLC releases as launch date for "Assassin's Creed 5" is set to be announced soon. AC4's lead writer Darby McDevitt recently teased fans about the series in an interview with Edge, but didn't divulge any specific details about the upcoming installment.
McDevitt cleared up a rumor floating around stating an email in AC4 listed the potential locations of AC5. The lead writer claims he was parodying what fans of the franchise have been suggesting for future locations.
"I will say that fans definitely think alike. We have the same goals for the series, let's say. I'll leave it at that. We always want to surprise," McDevitt told Edge.
According to McDevitt, the AC series also doesn't have a particular ending in set for the franchise.
"We stayed on course maybe 75 or 80 per cent of the time," McDevitt told Edge. "The end of the Desmond trilogy changed slightly but it was always intended to end that way. And then about two years ago we planned for another story - there's been a bit of confusion in that [Black Flag game director Ashraf Ismail] once said that Assassin's Creed has an ending - that's not exactly true."
"This storyline has an ending, but because all of history is open to us we see the universe as a Doctor Who type thing," McDevitt added. "There are so many possibilities we don't want to definitively end the universe, but we can have storylines that have endings."
"Assassin's Creed 5" is set to be released sometime in 2014, but an official launch date hasn't been confirmed.
