Call of Duty: Ghosts will hit stores on November 5, according to an official announcement by Activision.
The video game publisher released the announcement on its website Wednesday.
In addition to being published by Activision the game was developed by Infinity Ward. The game developer is famous for the original “Call of Duty” video game as well as the “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare” series. The game will feature a new story, in a new setting and with new characters. The press release also says the game will be “powered by a new, next generation Call of Duty engine that redefines the series for the next generation.”
"Infinity Ward set the gold standard for first-person action for a generation, and they're going to do it again with Call of Duty: Ghosts," said CEO of Activision Publishing Inc. Eric Hirshberg. "Ghosts delivers an all-new story, all-new characters, an all-new Call of Duty world, all powered by a next generation Call of Duty engine, which is a leap forward for the franchise. Infinity Ward is going all-in to create the next generation of Call of Duty worthy of the world's greatest fans."
According to PCMag.com, Activsion had begun to tease gamers as they visited the company’s Call of Duty website. On the website was an image that slowly began to reveal more and more of itself. Upon its completion, it revealed a balaclava covered in a skull pattern. The balaclava is worn by Simon “Ghost” Riley, a British Soldier who appeared in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2.
IGN said Tuesday on its website that it had received a promotional poster confirming both the title and release date of the game. However, Activision did not make an official announcement till Monday.
Some of the excitement surrounding “Call of Duty: Ghosts” will most likely stem from its future availability on the next generation Xbox. The game will be made available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in addition to next generation consoles.
According to Executive Producer of Infinity Ward, Mark Rubin, there was a bit of a risk in the decision to go with a new series.
"Everyone was expecting us to make Modern Warfare 4, which would have been the safe thing to do. But we're not resting on our laurels," said Rubin. "We saw the console transition as the perfect opportunity to start a new chapter for Call of Duty. So we're building a new sub-brand, a new engine, and a lot of new ideas and experiences for our players. We can't wait to share them with our community."
“Call of Duty: Ghost” is now available for pre-order. It costs $59.99 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on Gamestop.com.
Gamers can get an exclusive look at the game during “Xbox: the Next Generation Revealed” which will air on Spike TV on May 21 at 1 pm EDT.
