Indiana (38-10) sits atop the Eastern Conference standings with a three-game lead over the second-place Miami Heat. The Pacers head into Friday's contest, a potential preview of the NBA finals, looking for their fourth straight win after escaping Atlanta on Tuesday with an 89-85 win.
"Our guys buckled down on the defensive end," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said, via ESPN. "(Atlanta) made a few shots in the last minute or two, but for the most part we held a pretty explosive team down to 85 points. That's a pretty good effort."
Indiana lost when they played Portland on Dec. 2, despite a 43-point game from Pacers star Paul George.
"I like the big games," said George. "It's always fun playing against tough competition, and we felt like we had an opportunity to win in Portland. We know we've got our work cut out for (Friday) night. This is a team that is going to be a great challenge for us, but we feel like we can take them down as well."
Portland, meanwhile, is coming off a 94-90 win on Wednesday against New York. The Trail Blazers (35-14) started off hot but have cooled down in the new year, winning just five of their last 10 games. Still, Portland is just one game behind the No. 2 San Antonio Spurs in a competitive Western Conference.
"I thought our defense all game was pretty good," Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts said of Wednesday's win. "I thought for us to win a game shooting 38 percent, it's not an easy thing to do."
