A University of California, Berkeley football player collapsed and died on Friday morning during a workout.
21-year-old defensive lineman Ted Agu, a college senior-to-be from Bakersfield, Calif., was pronounced dead after being transferred to a local medical facility, the Mercury News reported.
"This is a very difficult time for our football family," coach Sonny Dykes wrote in a statement. "Ted was a remarkable young man and a member of this family who was highly respected and loved by his teammates and coaching staff. He had an incredible passion for life and will be deeply missed."
Former Denver Broncos player Greg Kragen told the Mercury News that his son informed him a Cal football team member fainted during a conditioning run Friday morning.
Agu, who attended Cal with a public health major, was awarded Pac-13 All-Academic second-team honors after he received a 3.28 grade-point average fall semester 2013.
Teammates mourned Agu's death both in-person and on social media, the Mercury News reported.
"I'll never forget you, Ted," freshman teammate Cameron Walker wrote on Twitter. "The best example of a true Cal football player. On and off the field...One of the best men I had the HONOR of knowing."
"Prayers out to ted and his family guy was incredibly smart would help me and the other younger guys whenever we needed it in the classroom," Freshman Jonah Hodges posted.
In an earlier email sent to the parents of the players, Cal's football officials confirmed the Agu's passing.
"As many of you may have heard, the Cal Football Family suffered a tragic loss this morning," the email stated. "One of our beloved players, Ted Agu, has passed away. We have few details at this moment, but will communicate with the entire football family once they come to light. Please keep Ted and his family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."
