The Flappy Bird developer is shutting down the famous game hours from now because he "cannot keep it anymore."
Dong Nguyen, the Vietnam-based developer of the Indie smash hit game Flappy Bird, said in a recent tweet that he is going to remove the game from Google's Play Store and Apple's App Store in a matter of hours from now.
"I am sorry 'Flappy Bird' users, 22 hours from now, I will take 'Flappy Bird' down. I cannot take this anymore," said @dongatory in a tweet at 2 p.m. EST Saturday.
In a later tweet he clarified that his decision to shut down the game was his own decision and was not prompted by any legal controversies.
"It is not anything related to legal issues. I just cannot keep it anymore," said Nguyen in another tweet, offering no further details on the sudden shutdown of the game.
Flappy Bird, which was touted as the "new Angry Birds" game in the UK App Store, was published by dotGEARS studios. It was initially offered last May 2013 but became a hit in January 2014.
As of today, the "tap and tap" game is the hottest and number one in all digital distribution platforms. It has been downloaded for more than 50 million times already and generates $50,000 per day.
When asked why it is popular, Nguyen told The Verge, "The reason Flappy Bird is so popular is that it happens to be something different from mobile games today, and is a really good game to compete against each other. People in the same classroom can play and compete easily because [Flappy Bird] is simple to learn, but you need skill to get a high score."
Even though Flappy Bird is to bid goodbye soon, its developer still plans to keep on creating new challenging games that users will surely enjoy playing.
