A student from Denison University in Ohio was found dead on Saturday less than 24 hours after he was initially reported missing, the Associated Press reported.
David Hallman, a 21-year-old student from Erie, Pa., was discovered around 10:30 p.m., according to Granville Police Sgt. Keith Blackledge. Authorities located him near the Brew's Cafe, where he was last seen around 2 a.m.
University President Adam Weinberg, Provost Kim Coplin, and Vice President for Student Development Laurel Kennedy issued a memo notifying students of the incident.
"David was located Saturday night across the street from the Granville Golf Course, where it appears he had fallen asleep and then succumbed to hypothermia," Kennedy wrote in the memo.
"David was a member of the men's swimming and diving team for his first three years and was very close to that group," Kennedy added, noting that his former teammates will compete this week in the North Coast Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championship at Denison.
A report by The Newark Advocate claims Hallman was found clothed but not with a heavy coat. He may have been disoriented in the time leading to his death, the report added.
Blackledge said he did not believe foul play had a role in Hallman's death and the state's Bureau of Investigation is looking into the case.
The university's newspaper, The Den, said funeral arrangement have not been made though officials will continue to update students and faculty on a memorial service.
Many friends and colleagues took to Twitter to express their shock and sorrow at Hallman's death.
"One of our sons has fallen. RIP David Hallman '10. Let's rally and pray for the Hallman Family," read a tweet from Hallman's high school, Cathedral Prep.
I truly believe that only the good die young. Rest In Peace, David Hallman," another mourner tweeted.
