Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky became a figure of courage for his constituents and to the world when he decided to stay in his country to defend its sovereignty against the Russian forces under Vladimir Putin's command.
"Our truth is that this is our land, our country, our children and we will protect all of this," he said in a video message.
According to the United Nations Refugee Agency, around 1 million people have been displaced in the first week of Russia's attack on Ukraine. Reports say 16 children were killed in the attacks, and 45 more sustained injuries. Some babies are being born in bomb shelters.
Recently, after a powerful message that caused the EU translator on the English language channel to get emotional, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky received a standing ovation from the European Parliament.
In his speech, he echoed the exact sentiments of Ukrainian parents amid the ongoing war. "We desire to see our children alive. I think it's a fair one."
Among the children suffering from the dire situation in the eastern European country are Zelensky's two young children with his wife, First Lady Olena Zelenska.
Zelensky claimed that he was "marked" as Russia's top target, while his family was designated as the "No.2" target.
Family History
Volodymyr and Olena met each other at Kryvyi Rih National University. She was taking up architecture at the Faculty of Civil Engineering while he was studying law at Vadym Hetman Institute of Economics, per Tuko.
Before becoming Ukraine's head of state, Zelensky was a famous comedian in his country, per Then24. Thanks to his massively hit comedy TV show 'Servant of the People,' which was co-written by Zelenska.
In 2018, he got elected president with around 73 percent of the total votes. The couple got married in September 2003, and the following year, they welcomed their daughter Aleksandra.

Before her dad became 'Mr. President,' Aleksandra followed her parents' footsteps in show business. At ten years old, she played the daughter of Zelensky in a movie titled 8 New Dates. At age 12, she was cast in the comedy reality show 'Laugh The Comedian,' where the future president of Ukraine was a juror.
According to a report, Aleksandra, now 17 years old, is almost reaching the final phase of her schooling.
In an interview with a Ukrainian television channel, Zelensky disclosed that his daughter did not want him to run for a second term.
"No matter how much I love her, it depends solely on the level of our capabilities," Zelensky said.
In 2013, the Zelensky family welcomed Kiril. In an Instagram post from 2019, the Zelenskys enjoyed a terrific afternoon of face painting, showing both Kiril and his father painted masks on their faces.
However, per Romper, there is limited information about Zelensky's children to ensure their safety.
They are currently in an unknown location in Ukraine, where Zelensky is leading his country as it fights a Russian invasion.
