Following catastrophic weather events in early February in West Tennessee, US Senator Marsha Blackburn led the Tennessee delegation in pressing President Joe Biden to quickly accept Gov. Bill Lee's request for a Major Disaster Declaration.

Governor Lee requested disaster assistance as a result of the harsh winter weather, which included below-freezing temperatures, freezing rain, sleet, ice, and strong winds on February 3-4.

Crockett, Fayette, Haywood, Lauderdale, Shelby, Tipton, and Weakley counties have all asked for help from Governor Lee. The governor also asked for a statewide Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, according to MSMV Nashville via MSN.

Strong Winter Storm Expected in Most US States

A powerful winter storm is forecast to hit a huge part of the United States, dumping snow in the central region on Thursday before turning into a bomb cyclone and moving east over the weekend. From western Illinois to sections of Utah and Arizona, over 11 million people were under winter weather warnings on Thursday.

Snow was forecast to start falling late Wednesday into Thursday across northwest Missouri and eastern Kansas, according to a tweet from the National Weather Service in Kansas City. In Kansas City, Kansas, up to 8 inches of snow is forecast, with conditions peaking between 5 am and 3 pm. Meanwhile, up to 4 inches of snow is expected in Columbia, Missouri, he added.

The National Weather Service in Kansas City has warned that the commute on Thursday will be a struggle due to the snow. Schools in Kansas City, Missouri, stated that they would close on Thursday due to the weather.

According to Shackelford, up to 3 inches of snow might fall in parts of Nebraska and Flagstaff, Arizona. As the storm advances from Friday night to Saturday morning, it is forecast to bring heavy rain and potential thunderstorms to parts of the South, including Atlanta, Birmingham, Alabama, and Charleston, South Carolina.

As temperatures drop well below average, a wintery mix and snow will be present in some places. Snow is expected in areas of Alabama and Mississippi, with some flakes mixing in with the rain in Louisiana, as per Erie News Now.

US to Study Precautions After Tennessee Floods

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a bomb cyclone develops when the pressure of a midlatitude cyclone drops by 24 millibars in less than 24 hours. Extreme winds are one of the most dangerous aspects of these powerful storms.

As the cyclone nears hurricane status off the Atlantic coast, the Northeast will be hit by strong winds and snow. Blizzard-like weather and significant wind damage are concerns in the Northeast's interior.

Officials from the federal government have announced that they will support a project to investigate what infrastructure may help avoid further floods in a village where rushing waters killed 20 people.

According to a news release from the US Department of Agriculture, improvements under the Watershed and Flood Prevention Operations Program will be investigated to see whether they will assist in reducing flooding in Trace Creek in Humphreys County, especially in Waverly.

Severe floods ravaged the community of Waverly in August 2021. According to USDA officials, the project is one of those financed via President Joe Biden's infrastructure bill. In the aftermath of the floods, the US Army Corps of Engineers launched a study of the stream, AP News reported.
