United States President Joe Biden said on Thursday that he would be "very fortunate" if he were to face off against former President Donald Trump once again in the 2024 elections, hinting at a potential rematch between the two.
The Democrat's remarks come as his party is slowly losing its grip on the American people amid low public approval ratings. It is also at a time when the Republican businessman has continued to tease a potential 2024 presidential run.
Biden Rematch With Trump
Biden made the comments during a news conference from NATO headquarters located in Brussels, Belgium. The event was attended by other international leaders who are part of the alliance and discussed responses to Russia's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.
During the 2020 election, the Democrat bested his rival by more than four percentage points in the popular vote and by 74 Electoral College votes. Since then, Trump has claimed that the elections were rife with voter fraud, which he says is the reason that he lost the presidency, as per CNBC.
Biden's remarks came after he was asked by a reporter whether he or NATO would take steps to ensure that what they do now would continue despite the possibility that the Democrat would no longer be the U.S. president after 2024.
During his statements, the American president refused to name Trump at any point in his response and argued that he tackled foreign policy without thinking about elections. Furthermore, Biden said that there was still a long way to go before the next presidential election, shifting his focus instead on Democrats being able to retain control of Congress this year.
Running for President
According to Fox News, Trump, on the other hand, despite his continued hints, has yet to announce whether he would be running for U.S. president again in the 2024 elections. There are many other Republican lawmakers who are also rumored to consider a potential presidential bid, including Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
The situation comes as a recent poll showed that half of Americans are doubting that Biden will seek re-election in 2024. Some argue that the toll of the office, the burden of the coronavirus pandemic, high inflation, and Russia's war on Ukraine are some of the reasons for this perspective.
The survey found that roughly 52% of Americans do not think Biden will run for president in 2024 while only 29% expect him to aim for a second term. The poll also showed that 19% were undecided about the president's future. On the other hand, 41% of Democrats think Biden will run again while 32% did not believe he would. Among the left, 26% were unsure of whether the president will run again in 2024.
Previously, Biden and the White House have expressed that the president was planning to run for re-election. People close to the Democrat have hinted that his final decision on the issue will be known after the November midterms elections, the Wall Street Journal reported.
