A recent large-scale study reveals that using the diabetes medicine metformin before conception increases the chance of birth abnormalities.

According to a Danish study titled "Preconception Antidiabetic Drugs in Men and Birth Defects in Offspring," sons born to men who took metformin during sperm development were three times more likely to have genital birth defects than babies born to men who did not take metformin during sperm development.

Researchers used the country's comprehensive medical registries to correlate data on births, paternal metformin prescriptions, and birth abnormalities from over 1.1 million kids born in Denmark between 1997 and 2016.

The team discovered a 5.2 percent rate of birth abnormalities in 1451 offspring of men who filled metformin prescriptions during the 90 days before the offspring's conception, when the sperm are being created, compared to a 3.3 percent rate in unexposed babies.
