After testing positive for COVID-19 and displaying a minor sign of the dreaded virus, Mayor Adams went into isolation on Sunday and canceled public engagements for the week, according to his office.
Adams intended to take antiviral medicine in addition to going into isolation and canceling public appearances. Fabien Levy, the mayor's press secretary, indicated that he had no symptoms other than a raspiness. COVID-19 cases were on the rise across the country, with a number of high-profile figures in Washington and elsewhere testing positive for the virus, as per New York Daily News.
Eric Adams Is Latest Attendee of Super Spreader Event in Washington
As it is common among COVID-19 patients, it was not immediately obvious how Adams caught the virus. The mayor, on the other hand, was among those who attended a prominent Washington dinner for journalists and officials last week, where many of them tested positive for COVID-19.
According to NBC News, 67 participants of the April 2 Gridiron Dinner tested positive as of Sunday, including key White House officials. Merrick Garland, the Attorney General, Gina Raimondo, the Secretary of Commerce, and Tom Vilsack, the Secretary of Agriculture, all tested positive.
Adams has maintained an almost frenzied schedule of public events since taking office on Jan. 1, part of his attempts to persuade the city to return to routine. Adams had a jam-packed agenda after returning from Washington, where he visited with President Joe Biden and White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain, according to Adams.
A Monday news conference with the family of 12-year-old gun violence victim Kade Lewin, a Wednesday address at the National Action Network's annual convention, and a Friday visit at a Robert De Niro-hosted film festival were among the highlights.
Attorney General Merrick Garland, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, Reps. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, Senator Susan Collins, and Jill Biden's press secretary Michael LaRosa are among those who have been affected by the "super-spreader incident."

Per Daily Mail, the event at the Renaissance Washington Hotel drew almost 600 attendees. Guests have to present evidence of vaccination. Because of COVID-19, the dinner was canceled in 2021 and 2020. Members of Congress and other government officials were among those who didn't wear masks during the meal. Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control, were among those in attendance.
The dinner group did not include House Speaker Nancy Pelosi or Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser, who both tested positive for COVID-19. For members of the media, the Gridiron Club dinner is an off-camera, off-the-record affair. The yearly event is attended by politicians and other celebrities.
A Republican speaker, a Democratic speaker, and a speaker representing the current administration will speak at the event, which will also include a series of sketches done by club members. Valerie Biden Owens, Biden's 76-year-old sister, was also at the Gridiron dinner and tested positive for COVD-19. Her publisher stated that she is not in close touch with the president or first lady, and that a scheduled reception for her memoir has been canceled.
COVID-19 infections in the United States have stabilized at one of the lowest levels seen so far in the pandemic, with the country averaging 28,169 new cases per day, a rate that has remained essentially constant over the previous two weeks. The number of people dying every day is decreasing, with 516 fatalities per day in the last week.
Over 80 million COVID infections have been reported in the United States, with officials warning that true infection numbers could be three times higher due to a lack of available testing in some areas, asymptomatic cases, and the fact that some at-home rapid tests are not reported in official figures.
