Photographs and videos have circulated on social media platforms, showing the horrifying aftermath of the Brooklyn Subway shooting where 17 people were injured in New York City.

Authorities said that the incident occurred in the morning rush hour at a New York City subway station and noted that the attacker had not yet been identified at the time of writing. They said that the gunman opened fire at Brooklyn's 36th Street station at around 8:30 am local time.

Photographs of the bloody scene showed passengers bleeding and lying on the floor of the smoke-filled station. Authorities are now appealing for information from the public regarding the gunman's identity, who quickly fled the scene and remained at large.

New York City Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said that authorities were looking for an individual who was wearing a gas mask when he began shooting at passengers on the subway and the platform. The suspect is believed to have been wearing a green construction-type vest and a gray sweatshirt when he escaped the crime scene, as per BBC. The smoke inside the subway station reportedly came from a smoke canister that the suspect used to distract passengers before shooting his gun. One source close to the investigation said that the suspect's gun may have jammed, preventing further loss of life.

Authorities said they were able to recover a weapon from the scene as well as a bag with smoke canisters and fireworks. The evidence suggested that the attack may have been premeditated and planned.

According to NBC New York, one senior law enforcement official said officials had a rough idea of what the suspect looked like and was hunting him down. Furthermore, they found a U-haul van parked on Kings Highway in Gravesend with Arizona plates that may belong to the shooter.

Conducting a search, authorities said they were able to identify the owner of the U-haul and believe that he may be the gunman in the Brooklyn Subway shooting incident. The individual was found to have ties to Pennsylvania and Wisconsin and has past criminal records in both states as well as New York.

The city's fire department said that of the victims, five were in critical condition but noted that none of them received life-threatening injuries. Mayor Eric Adams has commented on the issue and said that the search for the suspect was being hampered by the fact that at least one security camera at the 36th Street subway station was not operating.

The said camera could have recorded the incident and may have captured the identity of the shooter responsible for the attack. In an interview, Adams said that authorities found the camera had a "malfunction."

Witnesses of the shooting said that the gunman was a short, dark-skinned man who had a heavy build. John Butsikares is a 15-year-old freshman at Brooklyn Technical High School. He said that his ride on a northbound R train from Bay Ridge was initially calm until the train approached the 36th Street station, the New York Times reported.
