President Joe Biden allegedly informed former President Barack Obama that he intends to compete for re-election in 2024 because he feels he is the "only one who can beat" Donald Trump.
Despite poor approval ratings, Biden's reported meeting with Obama is the latest hint that he wants to run for re-election. In early April, Biden and Obama had lunch together. It's unclear whether they talked about the presidential race in 2024.
Biden Plans To Run For President Again
Biden has said that he would welcome a rematch with Trump on multiple occasions. Biden claimed he would be "very fortunate" to run against Trump again in a news conference in Brussels in March. Trump has yet to say if he would run for president, but he has been organizing campaign-style rallies, as per Metro.
According to a CNBC poll issued last week, only 38% of Americans approve of Biden's job performance, compared to 53% who disapprove. When it comes to the economy, Biden's approval ratings are much lower: only 35% of Americans approve of his handling of the situation while 60% disapprove.
However, White House economists and some outside experts expect that inflation will level off and begin to decline. Voters may have a more positive impression of Biden when the coronavirus outbreak subsides.
Meanwhile, Obama returned to the White House for the first time since leaving office this month to commemorate the Affordable Care Act's first anniversary. Obama, 60, is still the party's most powerful figure, and Biden, 79, hired many former Obama aides when putting together his own White House team, years after Obama chose him as his running mate in 2008.
In anticipation of their early April encounter, White House press secretary Jen Psaki stated the two men are still close and talk on the phone frequently. " They're real friends, not just buddies from Washington," she remarked, as per Daily Mail.
During the 2010 midterm elections, which saw the birth of the Tea Party movement, Obama received a "shellacking," as he put it. Biden has had his own set of political disasters, including record inflation, recurring outbreaks of the coronavirus, failure to get his key budget recommendations passed by the Democratic Congress, and Republican resistance to his agenda and nominees.
Poll Reveals Joe Biden's Plummeting Approval Ratings
His approval ratings dropped as a result of the tumultuous departure from Afghanistan. Biden has also presided over economic growth and record-low unemployment, earning him a spot at the top of the Washington Post's presidential possibility rankings.
If the Democrats lose control of Congress, it might benefit Biden politically by providing him something to campaign against. Presidents such as Bill Clinton and Barack Obama have recovered from setbacks in off-year elections.
In a surprising twist, the author placed Vice President Kamala Harris in third place, stating that while her position is an excellent launchpad it's unclear if Harris has put it to good use. Her overall approval ratings are on par with Biden's.
In a scenario where Americans don't choose Biden or Harris, the study put Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg second in line based on pure plausibility. According to New York Times writer Charles Blow, the pressure on Biden comes as Democrats face a potential "bloodbath" in the November elections if they don't turn things around.
