Wyoming Republican Rep. Liz Cheney is at the top of Donald Trump's list of GOP foes.

The former president, who sponsored and helped fundraise for Harriet Hageman in her attempt to unseat Cheney in this year's Republican primary, will travel to Wyoming later this month to headline a rally for his preferred candidate.

Trump To Hold Rally in Wyoming

On Monday, Trump announced that he will conduct a rally in Casper, Wyoming, on May 28. Cheney, a longstanding Republican Trump opponent, was the most senior of the ten House Republicans who voted to impeach the president on charges of encouraging the fatal attack on the US Capitol. Right-wing radicals and other Trump supporters launched the attack to prevent Congress from certifying President Biden's Electoral College victory in the 2020 election.

A conservative legislator and defense hawk who is the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney was instantly chastised by Trump and his supporters, and she was forced to resign from her post as House GOP leader in May.

Cheney is one of just two Republicans participating on a special select committee set up by House Democrats to examine the storming of the US Capitol. Cheney has been vocal about the need of safeguarding the nation's democratic process and putting country before party, according to Fox News.

On Aug. 16, Hageman, an attorney, and Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, will square off in the nation's smallest state. Cheney was the House Republican's No. 3 until she was forced out last year in punishment for her harsh criticism of Trump. Her House colleagues originally supported her as she joined nine other Republicans in voting to impeach Trump for allegedly instigating the Capitol riot last year, but they grew dissatisfied with her ongoing criticism of the former president.

Cheney eventually became a member of a Democratic-led committee investigating the disturbance. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) turned down pro-Trump Republicans chosen by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy for the panel (R-Calif.) During Cheney's four years in office, he and Trump fought on foreign policy, with Trump promoting an America first philosophy that included pressuring partners to fund their defense.

Because of Cheney-pushed limits on evacuating US troops from Afghanistan, Germany, and South Korea, Trump rejected a $740 billion defense bill in December 2020. Trump frequently refers to Cheney and her father as "warmongers," and he singled her out in a speech to his supporters before storming the Capitol to prevent President Biden's Electoral College win from being certified, New York Post reported.

Donald Trump's Grip on Republicans Face First Test

The first big test of Donald Trump's hold on Republican supporters will take place on Tuesday when a crowded and fractious US Senate race centered mostly on the former president concludes. In a contest marked by prominent contenders positioning themselves as standard-bearers of Trump's America First movement and emulating his harsh manner, Trump nominated venture billionaire JD Vance.

However, scores of Ohio Republican officials reacted angrily to Vance's endorsement, warning that he would reduce Republican turnout in the general election and throw the seat to US Rep. Tim Ryan. The likely Democratic nominee is Representative Tim Ryan. Vance's opponents were also supported by a major GOP group and Trump-allied conservatives such as Texas Senator Ted Cruz.

Ohio is the first in a string of primaries that will determine the strength of Trump's support, which he is using to stave off prospective presidential challenges in 2024 if he runs again.

Trump has also endorsed candidates in high-stakes Republican Senate primaries in Pennsylvania, which will be conducted on May 17, and Georgia, which will be held on May 24. The president's party has usually lost seats during his first term, thus Republicans are widely favored to take control of the House in November.

The Senate is now tied 50-50, and the GOP's chances of gaining a majority in the upper house are dimming, owing to concerns about Trump's statewide electability, according to Bloomberg via MSN.
