Donald Trump Jr., the son of former United States President Donald Trump, appeared and testified before the House Select Committee regarding the unprecedented attack on the Capitol building on Jan. 6, 2021.
A person close to the former president's oldest son revealed the news on Wednesday and noted that Don Jr., appeared by videoconference and talked with the committee for two hours. The source added that the discussion was considered to be "pretty uneventful."
Donald Trump Jr.'s Testimony
On the other hand, a spokesperson for the committee did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the testimony. Don Jr., through a spokesperson, also declined to comment on the matter.
Lawmakers have been eager to speak to the son of the former president and question him regarding his father's alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. They also wanted to ask him about his efforts to press his father, through then-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, to quell a pro-Trump mob that was responsible for assaulting Capitol Hill, as per NBC News.
The situation comes as the chair of the committee, Rep. Bennie Thompson said this week that Ivanka Trump, the former president's daughter, helped "fill in a lot of the gaps" with her testimony in April. He noted that she revealed the role her father played in the insurrection conducted by his supporters.
In a statement, Thompson said that Ivanka, who was also Trump's former top aide in the White House, answered questions about what she was doing at the time that the riot was happening. Investigators of the committee asked certain questions about Ivanka's awareness of what her father was doing at the time.
According to People, the 40-year-old was reportedly forthcoming in her testimony and did not invoke the Fifth Amendment or executive privilege similar to what other Trump allies and administration officials have done. Her testimony lasted for roughly eight hours and was conducted remotely on Apr. 5.
Investigation of Capitol Hill Riot
Thompson added that Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner, who also served in the Trump White House, did not testify against the former president or gave away any "trade secrets." He said that they corroborated the testimony of other witnesses who alleged former President Trump was reluctant to intervene to stop his supporters from attacking the Capitol building.
During an interview, the committee chair said that the couple supported the fact that the Republican businessman was told he had to do something to alleviate his supporters' anger. They allegedly told the former president that he had to be public about his statements.
The series of questioning comes as the committee continues to seek testimonies from key GOP lawmakers and has set 8 days of public hearings in June. Lawmakers planned to send requests for testimonies to individuals, including three House members who previously refused to cooperate with the investigations.
Furthermore, the panel plans to send new interview requests to several other Republicans, including at least one senator. Thompson did not reveal who the committee wanted to question other than House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Rep. Jim Jordan, and Rep. Scott Perry, CNBC reported.
