The Disinformation Governance Board proposed by the White House on April 27 is on hold, as this comes after the announced sale of Twitter to Elon Musk. Until the review of the fake news board, it will not be official, leaving democrats any means to censor information.
White House Pauses Disinformation Governance Board
The Biden administration has declared the shutdown of the hotly disputed Disinformation Governance Board. Nina Jankowicz, who was selected to lead the new board, resigned from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), reported Sputnik News.
Washington Post described Jankowicz's and the disinformation board's criticisms as a coordinated online campaign by far-right influencers who misconstrued the board's goal and mission.
The board was announced by the White House only three weeks ago to assist the DHS in countering disinformation from Russia, China, and Iran, as well as at the border.
An irony of the propaganda board's revocation and withdrawal as an outcome of alleged disinformation was not lost on Fox News White House journalist Peter Doocy. He asked White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre about it.
Jankowicz stated about her departure and called it a distraction from the Department's vital work. Along with recent events globally and nationally, it embodies why it is necessary.
Maintaining a commitment to raising awareness of disinformation threats and having faith that the Department will do the same, citing NPR.
Sources say the DHS decided to take a step back from the Disinformation Governance Board last Monday, and the White House promised to let her stay on in the meantime, but she declined.
Critics of the false news board tried to compare it to the Ministry of Truth from George Orwell's dystopian novel 1984, and they disparaged the head herself.
The Disinformation Governance Board is intended to assist the DHS but has no power to define the truth or make operational decisions.
Disinformation Governance Board Head Resigns
A criticism leveled at the incoming leader was severe. She recently stated that verified Twitter users should be able to edit posts to add context to claims, and she was widely mocked online after users unearthed a video of her and sang a pastiche of a Mary Poppins song, adjusting the lyrics to address the dangers of fake news.
Republicans commended the public statement that the Department would be paused and Jankowicz would resign.
Even so, some left-wing free speech advocates welcomed the announcement, as they were worried about how future administrations, including a potential Trump presidency in 2024, might use a disinformation board.
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Glenn Greenwald agreed with ending the fake news board and called it a celebration instead. He thought she was absurd and looked foolish in the clip that brought everything down.
The National Endowment for Democracy and George Soro's Open Society Foundation, according to The Nation, funded StopFake. It usually mentioned Soros without referencing his financial backup for the organization, noted ABC News.
StopFake is a Facebook official fact-checking partner, offering it the power to restrict news on the platform.
DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has decided to ask the Homeland Security Advisory Council to lead an investigation into the fake news board, with a final recommendation due in 75 days even if the board comes back, no Jankowicz.
Suspension of the Disinformation Governance Board and no one to head it will be something for the White House to deal with as another setback for the democrats.
