Yahoo has acquired Wander, the startup behind the popular iOS app "Days," in an attempt to expand its portfolio of apps for mobile devices.
Yahoo is continuing its shopping spree and Wander is the latest addition to the web giant's list of acquisitions. Wander is a New York City-based startup responsible for the popular daily diary app for iPhone called Days, which lets users collate and share photos taken throughout the day in a single place and make a visual diary of memories.
The Wander team will move in to Yahoo's New York City office of mobile and emerging products, which is responsible for redesigning Yahoo Mail, Weather, Flickr and others apps. Wander's acquisition does not change the way its Days mobile app works, as the app will continue as a standalone entity, the company said in a blog post, Tuesday.
"Our entire team will be joining Yahoo's NYC-based Mobile and Emerging Products group, where we'll continue on as a startup team within a larger organization," the company said. "The Days app will live on as a standalone entity, and we'll also be working on some exciting new projects that we can't talk about just yet."
Yahoo's CEO Marissa Mayer has been on a buying spree since she took charge in 2012. The company has added nearly 30 startups to its portfolio. The focus on acquiring companies behind popular mobile apps is just another step toward taking center-stage in the smartphone and tablet sectors.
Wander's Days mobile app is available for iOS devices with version 7 and above. The free app has managed to get top star rating of 4+ on iTunes. It supports functions like hashtags to search for users, and @mentions. Days supports animated GIFs and shares photos outside the app.
