Qualcomm has rolled out an update for its pricey Toq smartwatch to add functions such as fitness tracker, new watch faces and world clock.
Qualcomm, well known chipmaker, is upping the ante on its battle with other wearable techs in the market by rolling out a significant update to its Toq smartwatch. The techwear, mostly appreciated for its hardware, is bringing some changes to the software so it can keep up with the ever-increasing competitive wearable tech market. An update to watch's Android companion app brings a new activity tracking tool to monitor user's movements and grant points.
The new tracker added to the Toq brings the smartwatch in competition with Nike FuelBand SE, which offers similar functions. After testing the new feature, Sean Riley of Android and Me said the "slightest movement of the watch seems to record as a point." The Toq watch records every movement and grants a user points accordingly, which sums up the data about user's daily activity. Though the app warns of higher battery consumption when turned on, Riley found the watch lasted for a week. The latest integration of the fitness tracker in Toq is still in beta phase, which means there is scope for improvements.
The Toq update also brings new watch faces, one shows current activity points along with time and another one displays a world clock. Users can set a list of cities for the world clock through the mobile app and toggle by tapping on the watch's touch screen.
The update has an option for users to switch the temperature from Fahrenheit to Celsius.
Qualcomm introduced the Toq smartwatch in December, last year, for $349.99. To justify its expensive price tag, the company said the watch features unique Mirasol touch screen display that offers full color display and also long-lasting battery life, as it takes power from light in a natural environment. The watch shows text messages, calendar events, call notifications, weather updates, stocks and shares and lot more. Users can also listen to music with the paired Bluetooth headsets that arrive along with the watch.
The updated Android app with new features is available from Google Play Store, but if you have automatic app updates turned on, then you must be able to witness the change automatically.
