One of Brittanee Drexel's former victims, a sex offender previously convicted of raping seven teenage girls, has come forward to recount the agony she endured after being kidnapped and sexually tortured by him in 1983.
Kerri Harding, now 48, also expressed her indignation that Raymond Moody, who raped her when she was eight years old, was released from jail after serving just under half of his 42-year sentence for sexually abusing her and six other kids in Vallejo, California.
Other Victim of Brittanee Drexel's Killer Recalls Her Traumatizing Encounter
Moody, now 62, was freed in 2004. Investigators claim that in April 2009, he abducted, raped, and strangled 17-year-old Brittanee Drexel while she was on a spring break trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Years later, on May 4, 2022, he admitted to murdering Drexel. Her body was discovered a week later outside of Georgetown.
The adolescent, a Rochester, New York native, was on a trip with friends at the time, unbeknownst to her parents. He is now charged with murder, abduction, and first-degree criminal sexual misconduct, all of which carry the death sentence. Harding stated that on a winter morning in 1983, she was meeting a friend for a play date at a school playground. Harding initially saw Moody bouncing a basketball by his car as she strolled near the school.
Moody warned her not to walk in the area she was headed because a fence was being repaired. Harding claimed she ignored him but discovered he was speaking the truth, so she turned around and returned to where the predator was waiting. Harding stated that Moody sat in the passenger seat with her head down, steering with one hand. Moody informed her that she was too young to be left alone and that he was taking her to a police station.
Moody eventually led Harding to a presumably abandoned house building site. After being brutalized for hours, Harding was able to persuade Moody to let her go to the restroom as he held her hair. A puddle of blood poured forth as Harding tried to urinate, causing Moody to lose his grip on her. Harding stated that her mother and aunt took her out for a drive near the location where she was taken in the hopes of recognizing Moody's automobile.
After a while, Moody recalled that his automobile was emblazoned with a green bumper sticker that military personnel used to gain entrance to the neighboring navy facility, Daily Mail reported. Authorities reported on May 16 that they had found Brittanee Drexel's remains after a 13-year inquiry and that 62-year-old Raymond Douglas Moody of Georgetown, SC, had been charged with her murder, criminal sexual conduct, and abduction.
Moody is wanted on suspicion of causing her death by physical strangulation on or about the night of April 25, 2009. The suspect had been held in jail instead of $100,000 bond since May 4 on an obstruction of justice charge but was detained without bail after being charged with murder.
During a news conference, officials stated that they were directed to the site on May 4, that the remains were unearthed on May 7, and that they were definitively identified on May 11 using dental records and DNA testing. The remains were returned to the Drexel family after a postmortem examination by the Georgetown County Coroner.
Raymond Moody's Girlfriend Says She Will Stand by Him
According to Yahoo News, Moody is on the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division's sex offender register for convictions in 1983 in California for rape by force, abduction, indecent or lascivious conduct, and sodomy with a minor under 14.
He was released from jail in 2004 after serving 20 1/2 years of a 40-year sentence, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, and then relocated to South Carolina. His supervised parole was terminated in 2007. There is also a citation for failing to register in South Carolina dated 2010 on the sex offender registry website, as per WMBF News.
Meanwhile, Raymond Moody's girlfriend says she supports him even though they were together when he allegedly raped and killed 17-year-old Brittanee Drexel. In an unexpected twist, the suspect appears to have been living a double life, since he has a long-term partner of over 15 years, Angel Vause, who lives at their joint house.
When asked whether she's worried that people would think she knew about the murder, she said she's well-known in the community and that friends and family believe her tale. Despite not divorcing Moody, Angel, a nurse, expressed sympathy for Brittanee's family, saying, "I lost a kid who was 16 years old, he was in a vehicle crash," as per The Sun.
