Maryland Man, Brian Matthew Ogle, Charges At Deputy With Machete-Like Knife

A Maryland man charged at a Harford County deputy with a machete-like knife late Tuesday, ABC News reported.

Shortly before the incident, deputies and medical personnel were responding to a call in Edgewood about a possible drug overdose. Additionally, they were warned that the person was armed with a knife and allegedly pushed a woman down the stairs.

When officers arrived, they discovered the man -- later identified as 26-year-old Brian Matthew Ogle -- with the knife in hand. Ogle began running towards the deputies with the knife and resisted orders to drop his weapon, prompting officers to shoot him.

"Fearing for his safety the deputy then fired his duty weapon striking the suspect several times," a sheriff's office release said.

Ogle was treated for his injuries at the scene and taken to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center for further care. On Wednesday morning, he was listed in stable condition. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

As Ogle was being treated, a 24-year-old woman told authorities at the scene that she and Ogle got in a fight, which led to him pushing her down the stairs. She said he then left the apartment and walked outside to his car, smashing a window and pulling out a large knife.

Police said he was trying to kick down the door when they arrived.

The woman was transported to Upper Cheasapeake Medical Center for her fall. Her injuries were minor and not determined as life-threatening. Her name has not been released.

Though authorities did not identify the deputy that shot Ogle, he was said to be 34-years-old and a seven-year member of the sheriff's office, assigned to the Patrol Service Bureau at the Southern Precinct. Following the incident, he was placed on administrative leave as the investigation continues.

Ogle is facing charges of second-degree assault as well as resisting arrest, attempted first- and second-degree assault on a police officer, failure to obey a lawful police order, and weapons charges.
