Warner Bros. surprised the public with a photo of Ryan Gosling as Barbie's tanned and toned plastic boyfriend Ken on Wednesday.
Fans of Ryan Gosling, cinephiles, and average Twitter users are reacting intensely to the sight of the Canadian actor, who stars opposite Margot Robbie, who plays Barbie. According to CNN, it is the first official photo of Gosling portraying one of the most famous characters in toy stores.
Gosling's Ken Doll seems a Malibu guy to the core. He appears to have an eight-pack of abs and bleached-blond hair in the photo. He's wearing a sleeveless denim vest without a shirt in front of a Pepto-Bismol pink backdrop, and his underpants are oddly imprinted with his name.
Greta Gerwig will direct the Ryan Gosling movie from a script she co-wrote with Noah Baumbach, as indicated by the images of the two actors, per The Guardian. Barbie is played by Margot Robbie, who has blond hair, smiles, and a bright pink automobile. Her Barbie resembles Sharon Tate from the movie 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' or her character in 'The Wolf of Wall Street.'
What Is the Story of This 'Barbie' Movie?
Vulture reported that, per a Deadline article, the film was previously set to be produced by Sony and would include "a fish-out-of-water" plot a la Splash and Big, in which Barbie is booted out of Barbieland because she's not flawless enough, a little eccentric, and doesn't fit in."
The original plot states that Barbie "goes on an adventure in the real world and by the time she returns to Barbieland to save it, she has gained the realization that perfection comes on the inside, not the outside, and that the key to happiness is belief in oneself, free of the obligation to adhere to some unattainable standard of perfection."
It is still unclear whether that's the plot of Gerwig and Baumbach's rendition of the screenplay, but it's reasonable to think these independent cinema darlings will make it unconventional in some ways.
The stellar cast, which includes comedians Issa Rae and Will Ferrell as well as rising stars Hari Nef and Ncuti Gatwa, adds to the mystery of what the film might be about. Some of the other cast members are reported to be playing different versions of Barbie and Ken. The question is, who will portray the character of Skipper?
Fans will have to wait until July 21, 2023, to see what the amazing cast of Barbie, Ken, and Will Ferrell is up to.
Celebrities and Fans React

Celebrity talk show host and comedian Conan O'Brien posted a witty remark: "I can't believe Ryan Gosling is playing Ken in the Barbie movie, I'll put my smooth mound up against his any day."
Some Twitter users compared Freddie Prinze Jr.'s Fred character from the Scooby-Doo films in the 2000s to Gosling's Ken Doll.
"Freddie Prinze Jr's Fred walked so Ryan Gosling's Ken could run," one user twitted.
