Vladimir Solovyov, a Russian political commentator, boasted about Russian forces declaring the capture of American troops.
Mr. Solovyov stated that the trial for the American troops will be based on precedent and that a death sentence will be imposed. Russian President Vladimir Putin has been chastised for Russian-aligned troops in Luhansk executing British servicemen Shaun Pinner and Aiden Aslin.
Russian Forces Allegedly Captured US Fighter in Ukraine
Officials from the Western governments are waiting for additional information on the detained American servicemen, who were in Ukraine training with the Ukrainian army before their detention. The missing fighters are believed to have been apprehended by Russian forces in Ukraine. The American servicemen were training alongside Ukrainian forces in Kharkiv and had been gone for more than a week.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously sought to offend Western governments by executing two British troops. Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pinner were condemned to death in Luhansk, a Russian-occupied region of Ukraine, last week.
Despite Putin's claims, Russia recognizes the DPR as a sovereign entity. It is a territory of Ukraine where the death penalty is not recognized under international law. Secretary Sergey Lavrov has rejected any Russian role in the judgement handed down by Russian-backed forces in Luhansk, Express reported.
Captors Mocks UK About Execution of 2 British Soldiers
Meanwhile, the president of the so-called Donetsk People's Republic declared that the UK is indifferent to its citizens because it has not interfered with the scheduled execution of two British citizens captured in Ukraine. Denis Pushilin said that British nationals Shaun Pinner and Aiden Aslin, who were seized in Mariupol, shall be killed by firing squad for fighting as paid members of Ukraine's armed forces while acting as mercenaries.
Following a spectacular trial in which they were kept in a cage as their destiny was read out, the duo received a death sentence last week. Pushilin, a senior member of Russian President Vladimir Putin's United Russia party, now claims that Britain has failed to press for their release, demonstrating contempt for its people.
Aslin, 28, and Mr. Pinner, 48, were members of regular Ukrainian military troops fighting in Mariupol, Ukraine's southern port city that saw some of the worst combat since Vladimir Putin's invasion of the country. They were apprehended last month when Russian soldiers overran the beleaguered and destroyed the port city of Mariupol and forced the city's surrender.
Earlier this week, UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, a favorite target of Russian state media, stated that the best way to obtain the release of Aslin and Pinner was via the Ukrainians, as per Daily Mail. Separatist officials said the three arrested troops have a month to file an appeal. Kyiv has promised to attempt to obtain their release through a prisoner exchange with Russia.
Meanwhile, Moscow has stated that it is willing to accept a UK appeal over the fate of Aslin and Pinner. Dmitry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesman, said neither Moscow nor the pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine who passed the sentence had heard from London on the matter.
The proceedings have been regarded as a sham in the United Kingdom. Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said on Tuesday that the best way to achieve the men's release was through the Ukrainians, but she would do whatever it takes, according to Independent.
