Chicago shootings see a massive rise in the number of victims, with 35 people being shot over the bloody July 4 weekend incident, five of which have died, in the latest gun violence in the United States.

On Friday night, a 24-year-old woman lost her life during a shootout between two men in the city's Chinatown area. One of the shooters and two other people were wounded in the incident as the woman was struck in the torso and was taken to Stroger Hospital but died of her injuries.

Four other victims were found to be wounded on Friday night after a shooting in West Garfield Park when a man walking down the road opened fire on a group of people. One of the victims, a 25-year-old man, was struck in the back and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition. The other three victims were also brought to the hospital but listed in good conditions.

Another individual, a 30-year-old man, was fatally shot in the head on the city's South Side early Saturday, with police saying that they had no suspects in custody in relation to the incident. Later that day, a 90-year-old man was hospitalized after suffering a gunshot wound to the abdomen, with Mount Sinai Hospital listing him in critical condition, as per Fox News.

The incident came on the same day that Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot held a press conference where she expressed appreciation for the city's police officers. "We need to remember every single day on every single watch, our brave men and women of the Chicago Police Department are out there literally risking their lives for our safety," said Lightfoot.

Chicago Police Department (CPD) Superintendent Davair Brown joined the city mayor during the press conference, saying that the July 4 holiday would be a difficult weekend for law enforcement personnel.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the incidents come as last year, more than 100 people were shot over the long Fourth of July weekend, 19 of which fatally. Brown said, in an attempt to avoid another similar situation, residents should expect to see a heavier police presence in their neighborhoods.

Another incident resulted in the shooting of a 42-year-old woman who was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center with a gunshot wound to her hand. One of the gunmen, a 38-year-old man, was reportedly shot in the buttocks and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

On Sunday morning, three people were shot, one fatally, in a backyard in Grand Crossing on the South Side. The incident happened during a violent eight-hour span in Chicago where at least 16 people were shot, two fatally, late Saturday into early Sunday.

The recent shootings have become the latest in gun violence crimes in the United States that have caused concern among residents and officials. Two of the most notable incidents last month were the Uvalde, Texas, elementary school shooting, where 19 children and two teachers lost their lives, and the Buffalo, New York incident, where a gunman fatally shot several Black people in a supermarket, the New York Times reported.
