Danish police on Monday arrested a man suspected of killing three people and injuring several individuals in a shopping mall gun attack in Copenhagen.
The gun attack happened on Sunday inside Field's shopping center in Denmark's capital, per CNN. According to authorities, the suspect, who was heavily armed during the incident, was "known to psychiatric professionals."
Soren Thomassen, the chief of police in Copenhagen, disclosed that the lone suspect at this time is a 22-year-old Danish male who was detained in connection with the shooting. There is no evidence that the suspect was working with others, but an investigation is underway, according to the police chief.
Authorities said the suspect was armed with a "rifle and ammunition" during the attack.
Thomassen stated in a news conference on Monday that two male and female Danes, both 17 years old, and a Russian citizen, 47 years old, had been killed in the shooting.
The police official added other people were injured while fleeing the mall, including two more Danes and two Swedish nationals who had been shot. The victims sustained critical wounds, but they are now in stable condition.
Thomassen told journalists there was no evidence the incident was an "act of terror" or motivated by gender, and the victims were likely erratically selected. The police officer stated that the suspect would face manslaughter charges.
In a previous statement, the police claimed that they arrested the suspect 13 minutes after receiving the initial emergency call.
Horror Caught On Cam
Terrifying photographs of the attack have since surfaced as per a Daily Mail report.
Images from the incident showed the suspect being led away in handcuffs wearing a white hooded top.
Another photo shared on social media showed a man matching his description sitting in the grass under the close watch of armed police.
There are concerns that the murderer may be a white supremacist who reportedly backed the Danish far-right, anti-Islamic Hard-Line organization.
Meanwhile, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Sunday night extended her condolences to the families of the victims of the mall shooting, which she described as a "cruel attack" that is "heartbreaking" and "pointless."
In a statement, PM Frederiksen said: "Several were killed, even more, wounded. Innocent families shopping or eating out. Children, young people, and adults... I want to encourage Danish people to stand together and support each other at this difficult time."
Danish Royal Family Calls for Unity
The Danish royal family encouraged "unity and care" to the public following the horrific incident. Queen Margrethe II, Crown Prince Frederik, and Crown Princess Mary, in a statement, said that their "thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the victims, their families, and all those affected by the tragedy."
The mall where the shooting occurred was close to the Royal Arena, where pop superstar Harry Styles will have a sold-out concert.
According to a report from DW, the scheduled concert was abruptly canceled following the incident.
Styles posted a message on Snapchat regarding the attack. "My team and I pray for everyone involved in the Copenhagen shopping mall shooting. I am shocked. Love H."
