After Russian rockets pounded apartment complexes in eastern Ukraine, at least 15 people have died and more than 20 are thought to be buried in the wreckage.
This is the latest savage attack on civilians as the occupying forces try to take the rest of the Donbas region. In Chasiv Yar, a settlement of roughly 12,000 people in the northern part of the Donetsk province, where three buildings in a residential area were destroyed late Saturday, rescuers searched for survivors beneath the rubble on Sunday, according to Reuters.
Russia Aims To Seize Donetsk
Authorities reported that six people had been saved, but regional governor Pavlo Kyrylenko said that another 24 individuals, including a 9-year-old child, remain trapped.
The impact of the strike entirely severed the sides of one building, yet rescuers persisted in their work in the rain despite the perilous circumstances. Just a few miles away, the thud of artillery on the neighboring front line resounded, causing some workers to flinch and others to scamper for shelter when it got too close.
The Russians have their sights set on capturing Donetsk, which would give them complete control of the Donbas, after seizing the Luhansk region. Exactly 12 miles to the southeast of Kramatorsk, a key Russian target, is Chasiv Yar, USA Today reported.
Severodonetsk and Lysychansk, two cities in the neighboring Lugansk region, were taken after protracted fights; now, Russia is attempting to advance farther into Donetsk to strengthen its control over the entire Donbas region in the east.
Although they have been hitting front-line sites, Ukrainian forces have successfully repelled their advances, preventing them from making significant progress. The governor reports that, since the Russian invasion started on February 24, there have been 591 civilian deaths and 1,548 civilian injuries in the Donetsk area.
After the Kremlin cautioned that conflict "hasn't started in earnest yet," the British Ministry of Defence says that the attack on civilian targets came as Putin "prepares new operations in Ukraine as he pushes reserves across Russia to the Ukraine border."
According to a regular briefing tweeted by the British Ministry of Defence, a significant number of the new Russian infantry battalions are likely deploying with MT-LB armored vehicles pulled out of long-term storage as their principal mode of transportation.
Serhyi Haidai, the governor of the eastern province of Luhansk, issued a warning yesterday, saying that despite claims to the contrary Russian forces continue to 'create actual hell' in Ukraine's eastern industrial heartland. In advance of a Ukrainian counteroffensive, a different Ukrainian official urged residents of the Russian-occupied southern regions to leave as soon as possible "by all means."
Russia Launches 20 Artillery, Rocket
Russian bombardment has reportedly caused fatalities in the east and south of Ukraine. Over 20 artillery, mortar, and rocket attacks were reportedly made in the province overnight, and Russian soldiers were reportedly heading toward the border with the Donetsk region.
Beginning in June, both the United States and the United Kingdom committed to giving Kyiv game-changing, longer-range mobile missile weapons. Although it was too late to save Lysychansk from falling, the first four US-supplied Himars launchers arrived at the front at the end of last month, and five more have since been delivered, as per Daily Mail.
Iryna Vereshchuk, the deputy prime minister of Ukraine, urged residents of the Russian-occupied city of Kherson to leave immediately as her country's military forces were preparing a counterattack there. In the initial weeks following Russia's invasion on February 24, Ukraine lost control of the majority of the Kherson region along the Black Sea. She said she couldn't tell exactly when the counteroffensive would start.
Although no date has been set, the Russian-installed government in Kherson claims it plans to hold a vote on joining Russia. The Kremlin believes that the local population should choose the region's future. Nearly 300,000 people lived in the Kherson region, which includes the city of Kherson, before the conflict. The number of city residents that are still living there is unknown, according to ABC News.
