Former United States President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to lash out against the House Select Committee's Jan. 6 hearings and blamed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for the attack on the U.S. Capitol building.
At one point in the Republican businessman's rageful remarks, he said that the U.S. is "going to hell." Trump's comments come after the committee highlighted his inaction for more than three hours as his supporters continued to siege Congress. The former president also accused the panel of spreading "lies" regarding the incident.
Trump Rages on Truth Social
Shortly after the primetime hearing was adjourned, the former president wrote on Truth Social, "The Unselects are embarrassed by their 'performance' tonight!" Through all of his posts, Trump repeated his frequent claim that Pelosi had turned down his offer to send 10,000 National Guard troops to Washington ahead of the riot and asked why the "unselect committee" had not addressed the issue.
Apart from Trump's own words, there was no evidence that such an offer or request for troops was made by the White House. He argued that the committee refused to do so because it would end their "fake case," as per the New York Post.
The former president also once again brought up his unproven claim that the 2020 elections were a fraud. He questioned why the committee did not mention or study the alleged "stolen" election, even saying that there was "so much evidence" of it.
She then laid blame on Pelosi for turning down the troops, accusing her of being "disengaged," saying that she might have been "looking for her husband." In one post, Trump also tried to disparage former White House deputy press secretary Sarah Matthews, who was one of Thursday night's two in-person witnesses.
According to the Independent, Trump also criticized Wyoming Republican Liz Cheney, who is serving on the committee, calling her a "sanctimonious loser." He questioned why she did not choose to show the tapes of what he claimed were evidence that challenged the election.
Overturning the 2020 Elections
He said that the panel made many lies and misrepresentations in their investigation of the Capitol Hill riot, calling them corrupt and highly partisan. In another post, he went after Hillary Clinton, Stacy Abrams, and many others, arguing that they contested their elections longer than he has.
On the other hand, a committee aide said that the former president may have been the "sole person" with the power to stop the invasion but alleged that he "chose not to." The panel criticized Trump for his crucial 187-minute gap between the end of his pre-riot rally near the White House and his eventual Twitter call for the mob to go home.
The latest hearing marked the final scheduled presentation of the committee's initial findings from its investigation of the unprecedented insurrection until September. The nine-member committee, which is composed of seven Democrats and two Republicans, has argued that Trump is behind a multi-pronged conspiracy to overturn his election loss to Joe Biden in the 2020 race, CNBC reported.
