Republican Senator Chuck Grassley is holding the FBI and Justice Department accountable for downplaying damaging evidence on Hunter Biden in the run-up to the 2020 election, according to a whistleblower.

On Monday, Grassley disclosed that very credible whistleblowers had come forward alleging a systematic campaign inside the FBI to suppress bad material concerning President Joe Biden's son.

Whistleblower Claims FBI Wrongly Label Hunter Biden Evidence

According to Grassley, the leading member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which supervises the agencies, the whistleblower claims that certain FBI personnel conspired to undermine unfavorable material related to Hunter by fraudulently labeling it as misinformation. And, he argues, all of this occurred in the run-up to the 2020 presidential election.

A senior FBI agent at the bureau's Washington Field office ordered the closure of an avenue of disparaging Hunter Biden reporting in October 2020, one month before the election, according to Grassley. His letter comes on the heels of disclosures this week that the FBI investigation against Hunter Biden has reached a tipping point, with investigators debating whether to prosecute the president's son.

As per CNN, the Department of Justice investigation in Delaware has increased in recent weeks on whether to pursue people with tax evasion or making false claims about obtaining a gun. Hunter would have been barred from purchasing a firearm at the time due to his well-documented difficulties with drug addiction. After the 2020 election, he stated that he was being investigated for tax evasion although he denied any wrongdoing.

Donald Trump attempted to make Hunter Biden's business activities a campaign issue in 2020, which thrilled his followers at campaign rallies but did not prevent Biden from winning the presidency. President Biden has denied knowing anything about his son's business operations, and the White House has stated that it would not participate in any Justice Department investigations involving Hunter.

If Republicans win control of Congress in the November midterm elections, they are anticipated to investigate Hunter's financial dealings. The federal investigation, which goes back to 2018, is being led by David Weiss, the US Attorney for the District of Delaware. After Trump departed office, President Biden retained Weiss to continue the probe.

Hunter Biden Denies Criminal Wrongdoing

Hunter has not been charged with any crimes and has denied any criminal activity. The FBI and the IRS's criminal division have been involved in taking the investigations forward, and there have also been conversations about whether his previous drug misuse may damage their case.

Hunter may argue that he was high on drugs and wasn't aware of his behavior. The investigation represents a political flashpoint for Attorney General Merrick Garland. Officials have stated that the Justice Department has an unwritten rule to avoid presenting politically sensitive charges within 60 days of an election.

However, if Garland holds off on Hunter, he would be accused of Democratic bias, with some officials claiming that rule does not apply because Joe Biden's name is not on the midterm ballot, which decides which party controls Congress, Daily Mail reported.

The letter also singled out Justice Department employee Richard Pilger, who is listed as the director of the Election Crimes Branch under the Justice Department's Public Integrity Section, and who, along with Thibault, was included as a signatory to the letter, was claimed to have been heavily involved in the choices to begin and conduct this inquiry, a clear reference to the latest investigation into the Trump campaign.

When a complete investigation of a political character demands a heightened factual foundation, Grassley reminded Wray and Garland that the first document you approved featured media reports citing research from a leftist non-profit.

In addition to seeking information from the FBI and the Justice Department by August 8, Grassley expressed dissatisfaction with how the bureau and department are handled. The FBI confirmed receiving the letters but declined to disclose further. When asked for comment on the letter, the Justice Department stated that it had received it but declined to comment, according to CBS News.
