Indigenous senator Lidia Thorpe referred to Britain's Queen Elizabeth II as a "colonizing" queen while taking the oath in Australia's parliament, raising her fist in a Black power salute.

Thorpe, a Greens senator from Victoria, raised her fist as she walked up to the center of the parliament on Monday morning for the oath. The senator appeared hesitant as she pledged to serve the 96-year-old British queen, who continues to be Australia's head of state.

Australia's Lidia Thorpe Calls Queen Elizabeth II a "Colonizing Leader"

Thorpe added the phrase "colonising," which does not appear in the official oath. As other senators criticized her, Labor Senate President Sue Lines requested her to recite the oath as stated on the card. She read the words perfectly on the second try, then went to Twitter to declare "sovereignty never ceded" as she published a photo of herself raising her fist. Thorpe is an outspoken advocate for indigenous rights who have questioned the country's constitution.

As per Independent, Section 42 of the Australian constitution specifies that every senator and every member of the House of Representatives should make and subscribe to the oath of loyalty before taking his place.

Only a referendum may modify the clause. Australia won independence from British sovereignty in 1901 but, unlike numerous other colonies, never became a full-fledged republic. For more than a century, Australia was a British colony, during which time thousands of Aboriginal Australians were slaughtered or relocated.

According to Fox News, Thorpe later retweeted a photo of the incident, writing on her account "Sovereignty never ceded." On its website, the Australian Greens party acknowledges the Traditional Owners of country throughout Australia and recognize their continuing connection to land, waters, and culture, and that these lands were stolen and sovereignty was never ceded.

Scotland Urges To Remove Queen Elizabeth II From Platinum Jubilee Book

Meanwhile, Nicola Sturgeon's administration has requested 52 modifications to a book honoring the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, including altering the Queen's title.

Other demands included the removal of allusions to Brexit and England's 1966 World Cup victory. If schools in Scotland wished to order copies of the book for their students, they could do so online. According to correspondence obtained from the Scottish Government, the SNP administration requested 52 revisions to the book, which was intended to be a children's gift book distributed throughout the UK.

The curriculum and qualifications division objected to the book's title because "she is not the second Elizabeth here," alluding to the 1603 Union of the Crowns following Elizabeth I's death. They also claimed that because Brexit is so contentious, it should be excluded from a chronology of major events during the Queen's reign. Officials said that referring to the Queen Mother's 2002 death as a tragedy was a little tabloid when describing the death of a very old person.

The emails also stated that England's World Cup victory in 1966 should not be included because it was not that relevant in the non-England parts of the UK. There was also a complaint about the Queen's comments ahead of the 2014 Scottish independence referendum, in which she urged voters to think very carefully about the future.

The department stated that they were not content to be acknowledged in any way in the development or production of this book. The final Scottish version of the book included some of the suggestions, such as the Queen being referred to as "Her Majesty The Queen" rather than "Elizabeth II," her referendum comment, and her mother's death is described as a tragedy. The Brexit part, however, was retained, as was a summary of the 1966 World Cup, Daily Mail reported.
