Police in Spain say they have arrested a suspected member of the Pink Panther gang of jewel thieves on Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.
Borko Ilincic, a 33-year-old from Serbia, has been arrested and detained in the town of Alcala de Henares,Spain is believed to be part of the group which has committed hundreds of jewelry thefts across the world, police said on Thursday, the AP reported.
Interpol police said Ilincic is suspected to have been involved in the 2007 Wafi Mall robbery in Dubai where the robbers made off with around 11 million euros in jewelry, according to the AP.
Police said in a statement that Ilincic was using a fake Bosnian passport, the AP reported.
A national court official who spoke on conditions of anonymity said a judge ordered Ilincic to be held in prison for up to 40 days until the United Arab Emirates extradite him home, the AP reported.
The Pink Panther group is named after the 1963 movie starring Peter Sellers, according to the AP. The group is suspected to be comprised of about 800 criminals.
Interpol authorities believe the group is behind almost 300 robberies in 35 countries since 1999 and have stole a total amount of jewelry worth some 350 million euros, the AP reported.
