Michigan State, ranked No. 9 in the nation, has struggled over the past two weeks. The Spartans (20-4) have lost three of their last five games and are coming off a 60-58 loss on Sunday to Wisconsin. With March around the corner, coach Tom Izzo needs his Spartans to finish strong.
"We're down to seven games in the regular season - and it's hard to believe," Izzo said, via ESPN. "With four home games, we've got to take advantage."
Sophomore guard Gary Harris, who leads Michigan State in scoring with 17.6 points per game, was limited to just six points on 3-of-20 shooting by Wisconsin.
For unranked Northwestern (12-12), Thursday is an opportunity to make a name for themselves with a major upset. The Wildcats had their two-game winning streak ended on Saturday with a 53-49 loss to Nebraska.
Visiting a top-10 team on the road is no easy challenge, and the key to winning on Thursday for Northwestern coach Chris Collins is doing the little things well.
"We don't have the firepower to run away from teams, so we're going to play close games," Collins told the school website. "That's why we have to take care of the ball. That's why we have to get good shots. That's why, when we get fouled, we have to make free throws.
"If we get a layup, we have to make it. And when we get our open shots, you're not going to make them all. But we have to make our fair share."
