Since the start of the pandemic, there have been three rounds of stimulus checks, but many people urgently need another one. Even if inflation is still punishing consumers, states are rising to the challenge. However, not all states can satisfy the need for additional money.
Despite a minor cooling in consumer prices in July, they still increased 8.5% from a year earlier - close to a four-decade record and more than treble the Federal Reserve's objective of 2%, according to CBS News.
How To Be Eligible for Stimulus Checks in Each State?
CNBC reports that you can ensure you qualify if you live in one of the 16 states where extra stimulus checks and tax refunds are being sent out by reading the details of the current status and regulations for these programs below.
Florida
Gov. Ron DeSantis said in the middle of July that $450 one-time payments will be delivered to families that are caregivers, foster parents, or those who are enrolled in state assistance programs. The money will go to around 59,000 families.
Georgia
Persons who filed as the head of the household are entitled to $375, married couples who filed jointly are eligible for $500, and residents who filed singly or separately are eligible for $250. The majority of payments will be sent out by early August to taxpayers who submitted their taxes by the 2022 tax deadline of April 18 according to the website for the State of Georgia's Department of Revenue.
Hawaii
The legislation to refund each Hawaii citizen $100 or $300 depending on their income, tax filing status, and several exemptions was adopted by Gov. David Ige on June 22. For single filers and household heads who earned more than $100,000 last year, refunds of $100 are available; for those who earned less than $100,000, refunds of $300 are available.
California
The Franchise Tax Board's website states that eligible Californians will get up to $1,050 between the end of October 2022 and the middle of January 2023. To be eligible, you must not have been claimed as someone else's dependent during the 2020 tax year, have lived in California for at least six months during the 2020 tax year, and have filed your 2020 tax returns by October 15, 2021. Additionally, you must still be a legal resident of California at the time the payments are made and fulfill specific California-adjusted gross income requirements.
Colorado
The Colorado Cash Back Bill was signed on May 23, offering Colorado citizens the opportunity to get a tax rebate of $750 for solo tax filers or $1,500 for joint filers as long as they were regarded as full-year residents of the state in 2021 and at least 18 years old on December 31, 2021.
According to the state's Department of Revenue website, if you submitted your Colorado state income tax return by June 30th, you should have received your stimulus check by September 30th. Individuals who have prolonged tax return due dates in October 2022 had to get them by January 31, 2023.
Delaware
Gov. John Carney signed the Delaware Relief Rebate Program into law in May, enabling a one-time $300 payment to be provided to each adult citizen of the state. Delaware citizens must have submitted their 2021 state tax return before the deadline to be eligible, and they are then automatically eligible for the refund.
Indiana
The Hoosier state's Use of Excess Reserves statute, recently passed by Governor Eric Holcomb, allows for the issuance of a one-time $125 taxpayer return to citizens. All full-year residents received stimulus checks, regardless of income level, starting in May and continuing through July as long as their 2020 tax forms were in by January 3, 2022.
Maine
Thanks to new legislation that Gov. Janet Mills signed in April, Maineans are receiving one of the highest stimulus check amounts, with single filers receiving $850 and couples receiving $1,700.
By October 31, 2022, full-year residents who meet certain requirements must file a Maine income tax return, including having a federally adjusted gross income of under $100,000 for single filers, under $150,000 for married individuals filing separately, and under $200,000 for couples filing jointly or for a surviving spouse. Residents still have until October 31 to file their 2021 tax return to be eligible.
Idaho
GoBankingRates states that beneficiaries must have been full-year residents of Idaho in 2020 and 2021 and must have submitted income tax returns or grocery-credit refund returns for those years to be eligible for stimulus checks.
Illinois
Illinois is issuing checks for income tax rebates. Individual filers with earnings under $200,000 in 2021 are qualified for a $50 rebate, while married couples filing jointly and having incomes under $400,000 are eligible for a $100 rebate. There is a cap of three kid credits per household for those who claimed dependents, and each credit is worth $100.
Massachusetts
Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker said that citizens will receive a 7% refund on their 2021 state income tax payment, which is approximately $250 for someone earning $75,000 per year. The State Auditor will decide by September 20 whether Massachusetts will be allowed to award tax credits and how much they will be worth.
New Jersey
Gov. Phil Murphy enacted legislation last year that allows eligible New Jersey residents to receive checks of up to $500 as part of a Middle-Class Tax Rebate that provides child tax credits to individuals who reported at least one dependant on their 2020 income taxes.
South Carolina
South Carolina residents who qualify may soon get up to $800 in income tax rebates, due to a new measure signed into law by Gov. Henry McMaster in June. These reimbursements are given to individuals regardless of how they submitted their tax returns. Anyone who has not previously submitted their income taxes will not be eligible for a reimbursement.
Virginia
Residents of Virginia who incurred a tax burden last year are eligible for a one-time tax reimbursement of up to $500 under the state's one-time tax rebate program - a lump payment of $250 for those who filed separately or $500 for those who filed jointly.
It should be noted that stimulus checks will not be sent until later this autumn - as of this writing, the website states late October for individuals who submitted their 2021 tax returns by July 1. To be eligible, you must file by November 1st.
New Mexico
As a consequence of a new law approved by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham in early March, New Mexicans will get two distinct stimulus checks. More information is accessible on New Mexico's Taxation and Revenue webpage.
Oregon
Residents of Oregon who qualified for recent one-time aid stimulus payments got them by July 31. The $600 checks were sent to low-income Oregon residents who matched the following criteria: received the Oregon Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) on their 2020 tax return and resided in Oregon for the final six months of 2020.
Federal Stimulus Payment Update
At least 16 states are anticipated to issue relief payments to people to assist them to cope with increasing inflation since the Biden administration is unlikely to send the fourth batch of stimulus checks.
Following the delivery of the third and last round of government stimulus checks under the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, there has been significant speculation regarding the prospect of a fourth wave of federal stimulus. Despite the rhetoric, it is up to the states to use their tax surpluses to deliver repeated rounds of checks and refunds to assist suffering families during an economic downturn.
While Congress and the White House have no plans to launch the fourth round of government stimulus, despite pressure from the Democratic Party's progressive side, some analysts believe that a recession might compel the White House to act.
