Prosecutors notified Rudy Giuliani's counsel on Monday that he is the focus of a criminal investigation into suspected unlawful attempts by then-President Donald Trump and others to meddle in the 2020 general election in Georgia.
The discovery that Giuliani, an avowed Trump supporter, might face criminal charges as a result of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis' inquiry brings the matter closer to the former president. Willis has stated that she is contemplating summoning Trump to testify before the special grand jury, and the former president has retained an Atlanta criminal defense counsel.
Georgia Election Interference Probe
The FBI's investigation of Trump has intensified considerably. The FBI raided his Florida residence last week as part of its investigation into whether he transported secret documents from the White House to Mar-a-Lago.
In addition, he is the subject of a legal investigation in New York on charges that his firm, the Trump Organization, defrauded banks and tax authorities about the worth of his holdings. In addition, the Justice Department is looking into the Jan. 6 insurgency in the United States.
Giuliani, who disseminated false charges of election fraud in Atlanta's Fulton County while leading Georgia's election-challenging activities, is scheduled to testify Wednesday before a special grand jury convened at Willis' request. Giuliani's counsel declined to specify whether he would respond or deny inquiries. According to Giuliani's attorney, Robert Costello, special prosecutor Nathan Wade informed Giuliani's staff in Atlanta that he was the subject of an investigation. The New York Times was the first to report on the disclosure.

Guiliani May Face Criminal Charges
Giuliani indicated on a New York radio show Monday that he was acting as Trump's attorney in Georgia. Earlier Monday, a federal court determined that US Senator Lindsey Graham must testify before the special grand jury. Prosecutors have claimed that they plan to interview Graham about phone calls he allegedly made in the weeks following the election to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and his employees.
A phone contact between Trump and Raffensperger prompted Willis' probe. During the January 2021 chat, Trump urged that Raffensperger "find" the votes required to overturn his state defeat. Willis filed motions last month attempting to compel testimony from seven Trump allies and advisors.
Willis sought Giuliani's testimony because he was both Trump's attorney and the campaign's top counsel. She said that he and others went before a state Senate committee hearing and displayed a video of election workers creating suitcases with illegal votes from unknown sources, beyond the eyes of election poll observers, AP News reported.
Meanwhile, retired FBI counterintelligence assistant director Frank Figliuzzi stated on Monday that criminal charges against Rudy Giuliani are imminent in the Georgia investigation into suspected influence in the 2020 presidential election by former President Donald Trump.
Noting that privilege does not extend to crime, Figliuzzi suggested that prosecutors look into what Giuliani did on his own accord with Georgia authorities in an attempt to unlawfully reverse the Georgia election, as per HuffPost.
