Rep. Liz Cheney is hoping to leverage her landslide loss in Wyoming's Republican primary on Tuesday night into a worldwide fight to keep Donald Trump out of the White House, which she hinted at on Wednesday may involve her running for president herself.
Even though her six-year career in Congress is coming to an end, Cheney says her political work isn't over and is previewing what's next, including a possible presidential candidacy and a group focused on deposing Trump in 2024.
Liz Cheney Focuses on Stopping Trump
Cheney first hinted at a presidential run in her acceptance address, in which she cited President Abraham Lincoln as an example of patriotism and a Republican Party advocate. Harriet Hageman, a Trump supporter, viciously battered Cheney, a rising Republican star. Cheney said on Tuesday that if she had accepted Trump's assurances regarding the 2020 election, she may have won a second term.
Cheney has become one of the party's most ardent opponents of the former president as vice-chair of the House select committee probing the Jan. 6 insurgency at the US Capitol. On Wednesday morning, Cheney gave a more concrete signal that she is considering running for President. In the meanwhile, her priority will be to stop Trump.
Donald Trump has yet to openly declare a candidacy, but he has often hinted at a return since leaving office. Most recently, at CPAC, he informed Fox News that the moment is approaching for an official announcement, according to ABC News.
When asked again if she is considering running for president, Cheney answered, "That's a choice that I'm going to make in the coming months, and I'm not going to make any pronouncements here this morning - but it is something that I am thinking about."
When asked if Democrats should preserve control of Congress owing to the Republican Party's predicament, Cheney stated that it would be preferable to the prospect of election deniers obtaining power.
Cheney stated that the Republican Party is in extremely terrible health and that it might take several election cycles for it to be rebuilt and divorced from Trump and what she described as a personality cult centered on the former president. She also accused the former president of leaking the identities of FBI agents participating in a search of his Mar-a-Lago resort when he knows that our law enforcement is the subject of violence.
On Twitter, prominent friends of former President Donald Trump celebrated Congresswoman Liz Cheney's primary defeat on Tuesday. In the primaries, Hageman defeated Cheney by over forty points, satisfying the former president's most ardent followers on social media, as per NBC.
Who is Harriet Hageman?
Few people outside of Wyoming know anything about Harriet Hageman, whom Trump backed to succeed Cheney. Hageman, for her part, has criticized Cheney's position as vice chairperson. However, the former president is not the only Republican who supports Hageman. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who helped remove Cheney from her position as Chairwoman of the House Republican Conference, has backed her, as has Cheney's replacement in that position, Elise Stefanik. Bill Stepien, Donald Trump's former campaign manager, is also assisting Hageman in her efforts to depose Cheney.
Ageman, like Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, who held the same congressional seat and rose to the position of House Minority Whip, comes from a political family. Her father, Jim Hageman, was a state representative for 24 years before his death in 2006. Ms. Hageman spoke on the skills the older Hageman taught her during her failed gubernatorial race in 2018.
Hageman claims to be a fourth-generation Wyomingite. She ran for governor in 2018 but finished third. However, Hageman was not always a fervent Trump fan. She was one of a group of Never Trump conservatives that attempted to deny Trump the Republican nomination at the 2016 Republican National Convention, Independent reported
