The Duchess of Sussex has spoken out on the risks of being a successful woman today through her Spotify podcast with Serena Williams.
Meghan Markle revealed how meeting her husband, Prince Harry, influenced her concept of ambition in the first edition of her Archetypes podcast, which contains an interview with Serena Williams.
Meghan Markle: Listeners Should Expect "The Real Me"
The duchess revealed why she picked Williams to be her first guest on the show. The two women discuss Williams' tennis career and her recent decision to retire from the sport in the episode.
The tennis winner also admitted that, as a woman, she did not have the luxury of time that her male counterparts did when it came to establishing a family. Meghan Markle told listeners she would "be [herself] and talk and be uncensored," raising concerns in royal circles that she might expose more about life in the monarchy as she viewed it, as per Independent.
Dr. Laura Kray of the University of California, Berkeley, who examines how ambitious women are seen in the world and workplace, joined Meghan Markle later in the episode.
According to Kray, a professor at the Haas School of Business and the faculty director of the school's Center for Equity, Gender, and Leadership, research shows that ambitious women are frequently perceived as power-hungry, manipulative, and untrustworthy, whereas ambitious men are viewed as admirable.
In closing, Meghan Markle emphasized the negative implications associated with ambition today, particularly for women. As Serena transitions away from professional tennis after 25 years, Meghan Markle said she believes her friend will pursue her objectives off the court with the same zeal that made her a star, according to People.
Meghan Markle Recounts When Archie's Nursery Caught Fire
Meghan Markle also tells how her son Archie nearly avoided a fire in his bedroom where he was meant to be sleeping during the Sussexes' working royal tour to South Africa. Archie's nanny had taken the four-and-a-half-month-old tot downstairs to have a snack, and while they were gone, the nursery heater caught fire. Meghan claims she was informed after she and Prince Harry completed a formal engagement.
Serena adds that she spent an hour debating the topic with the Queen's grandson, Prince Harry, before deciding to withdraw from tennis. A new Archetypes promotional video was also published today, with the Duchess remarking, "It's time to cut through the noise."
Mariah Carey will appear as a guest in the second episode, which will air next week. The Archetypes podcast, hosted by the former Suits star, was introduced in March. Meghan Markle will study "the labels that aim to hold women back" in the series. The Duchess of Cambridge will meet with historians and specialists to "uncover the origins of these stereotypes and have frank dialogues with women who know all too well how these typecasts affect our narratives."
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's contentious African trip took place in the autumn of 2019, only months before they announced their retirement as senior working royals. During the trip, the former 'Suits' actress from the United States spoke with ITV about her challenges with royal life and how she coped with the expectations by keeping a "stiff upper lip."
"I think, you know, I think both of us, or the three of us, really know that sometimes the right decision isn't the easiest decision," Meghan Markle, who left the monarchy with the Queen's grandson for a new life in California, says to Williams.
In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle confessed that the monarchy's institution failed to aid a depressed Meghan Markle while she was pregnant with their baby. The Archewell Foundation revealed earlier this year that the couple's Spotify podcast will finally premiere this summer, 18 months after signing the pricey arrangement, Express reported.
