Former United States President Donald Trump slams his former ally ex-Attorney General William Barr after the latter appeared in an interview on Friday and said that there was no "legitimate reason" for classified documents to have been taken to Mar-a-Lago.
Barr added that he was skeptical of the claims that the former president has somehow declassified the documents. "Because frankly, I think it's highly improbable, and second, if in fact he sort of stood over scores of boxes, not really knowing what was in them, and said 'I hereby declassify everything in here,' that would be such an abuse and that shows such recklessness, it's almost worse than taking the documents," the former attorney general said.
Trump vs Barr
The former attorney general also rejected criticism that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) search was in the wrong because it was "unprecedented." Barr noted that while the agency searching Trump's estate was unprecedented, so was a president taking classified documents to a country club.
When Barr was asked about his stance on Trump's request for a special master to review documents pertaining to the FBI raid at Mar-a-Lago, he called the idea a "red herring" and a "waste of time," as per CNN.
The former attorney general added that there was a "legitimate concern" about protecting documents that could be related to Trump's private lawyer communications. However, it does not "appear to be much of it," he said, noting that he was "not sure you need a special master to identify it."
Trump was quick to lash out at Barr over the latter's Friday comments, saying that the former attorney general had "no guts" and got "no glory." The former president called Barr a "weak and pathetic RINO."
According to Business Insider, Trump claims that Barr is so afraid of being impeached that he became a captive to the "Radical Left Democrats." The former president also referred to his ex-ally as a "Republican In Name Only" on his social media platform, Truth Social.
Classified Documents
Trump added that Barr never fought the way he should have for Election Integrity and many other issues. The Republican businessman wrote in a second post that Barr's handling of the Russia investigation and the "Laptop from Hell," a reference to Hunter Biden's laptop, as being less than optimal.
Barr was largely viewed as a staunch ally of the former president while serving as Trump's attorney general from February 2019 to December 2020. The two's relationship changed when Barr came forward to say that the Justice Department had found no evidence of widespread voter fraud in the 2020 presidential elections.
The former attorney general added that what people were missing about the situation at Mar-a-Lago was that documents, regardless of whether they were classified, belonged to the government and must go to the archives.
Barr said that the other documents that were seized by the FBI, like news clippings, were "seizable under the warrant because they show the conditions under which the classified information was being held," the Washington Post reported.
