On the same day that the European Union's leader asked for a new war crimes investigation into the Kremlin, disturbing photographs of purported torture rooms used by Russian soldiers against Ukrainians emerged.

According to Ukrainian officials, at least some of the distressing photographs were taken in a dark cinder-block cellar serving as a temporary prison for Russian soldiers below a store in the freshly freed hamlet of Kozach Lopan in Ukraine's Kharkiv area.

Russian Chambers Contain Tools For Electric Torture

In some of the rooms with bars, dirty bedding can be seen lying on the moist concrete floor beside shattered bits of Styrofoam. There are also two black buckets in a corner that appear to have been used as toilets, as well as cigarette butts and empty pumpkin-seed shells scattered on the floor.

In his nighttime speech on Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that more than ten torture chambers have already been discovered in the freed parts of the Kharkiv region, in various cities and villages.

He further stated that a torture chamber and implements for electric torture were discovered near a railroad station in Kozach Lopan. The purported discovery come as the European Union's leader has asked for a war crimes investigation into the recently found mass grave site in the freed Ukrainian town of Izyum, which includes the death of women and children.

According to Ukrainian police, several of the victims were tortured before dying. Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky, whose nation now holds the EU chair, said that the hundreds of bodies discovered in Izyum might be unthinkable and disgusting war crimes, New York Post reported.

The Kremlin forces who were seizing Kharkiv in the country's north-east have down their guns and departed in the last several weeks following Ukraine's counter-offensive.

The offensive quickly reclaimed almost 3,000 square kilometers of land lost earlier this year to Vladimir Putin's soldiers. But as they discovered proof of Russian war crimes, the Ukrainian soldiers' delight rapidly turned to sadness. The horrors, which included torture rooms and mass graves, have been recorded by prosecutors.

Zelensky Accuses Russia of Genocide

So far, they have excavated more than 60 dead, including soldiers and civilians, from a burial location expected to contain at least 450 graves in woodland on the outskirts of Izyum in Kharkiv.

Zelensky condemned Russia for genocide in his TV speech on Saturday and said it will account for its crimes both on the battlefield and in the courtroom. Several fatalities, including those of four physicians and a nine-year-old child, were recorded in the Kharkiv area, as per Daily Mail.

The first victim discovered had a rope around its neck and appeared to have died in a violent death. Regional prosecutor Olexander Ilyenkov stated unequivocally that war crimes had occurred.

Around 100 Ukrainian rescue personnel are digging up the temporary graves in an attempt to determine the cause of death for hundreds of victims buried in the forest on the outskirts of the city. The pro-Russian administration that fled the area's capital accused Ukrainians of fabricating the killings, according to Mirror.
