As Instagram gains users across the world, the popular photo-sharing platform added a key the ability to tag photos, the company said in a blog post on Thursday.
The new feature, called "Photos of You," is essentially the photo-sharing service's colorful interpretation on tagging.
"When you upload a photo to Instagram, you're now able to add people as easily as you add hashtags," the company wrote in a blog post. "Only you can add people to your photos, so you have control over the images you share. And it doesn't stop at people -- you can add any account on Instagram, whether it's your best friend, favorite coffee shop, or even that adorable dog you follow."
Instagram said that when someone tags you in a photo, you'll receive a notification and the photo will be added to a new "Photos of You" section - again, just like Facebook. You can adjust your settings so photos don't appear in that section until you approve them. "Photos of You" will go public on profiles on May 16.
Previously, the only way to find out whether a photo of you had been uploaded to Instagram was to scroll through your feed, and hope your username was mentioned in a photo caption.
According to Mashable, @mentions will not be automatically converted into photo tags. According to the blog post, if you want to add tags to your old photos, you'll have to do it manually, one by one.
