House Speaker Nancy Pelosi explained to CNN's Anderson Cooper how she learned that her husband, Paul, had been attacked, saying that she was "very scared" when Capitol Police knocked on the door.

In her first in-depth interview since the attack, Nancy Pelosi said that she had been asleep when her doorbell rang early in the morning in Washington, DC, where she had arrived the previous evening from San Francisco.

The violent attack on Paul Pelosi has sparked new concerns over threats of political violence motivated by partisan animosity and increasingly hostile political rhetoric, as per CNN.

It has also highlighted the potential vulnerability of lawmakers and their families in the current political climate. Nancy Pelosi claimed that the doorbell rang again and that she then heard "bang, bang, bang, bang, bang on the door."

In the interview, Nancy Pelosi recounted the incident's aftermath and disclosed shocking facts about the state of her husband's health after the vicious attack. Throughout the conversation, Nancy Pelosi showed signs of emotion. "I've been on the verge of tears several times throughout this chat," she said.

At the end of last month, a male attacker assaulted Paul Pelosi with a hammer at the couple's San Francisco home, according to the authorities. ourt records state that the attacker was looking for the House speaker.

In connection with the attack, David DePape is charged of six offenses, including attempted murder, burglary, assault, false imprisonment, and threatening a family member of a public figure. To every state charge, he has entered a not guilty plea.

Nancy Pelosi Retirement

In addition, Nancy Pelosi stated that if Democrats lose the House in the next midterm elections, the attack on her husband will have an impact on her choice to leave Congress. Per The Hill, Nancy Pelosi said "yes" when Cooper pressed her more about if the attack will affect her choice; the complete interview with CNN is set to run at 8 p.m. on "AC360."

The interview takes place right before the Midterm elections, in which Republicans are expected to gain control of the House. If this happens, Nancy Pelosi's term as Speaker would come to an end, and it would be unclear if the longstanding head of the House Democratic Caucus will step down.

Nancy Pelosi said in 2018 that she would retire the Speaker's gavel at the conclusion of this term, but some Democrats believe she may stay in office if the party manages to pull off an upset and maintain control of the lower chamber. But with Republicans being heavily predicted to take back the House, such a result would come as a huge shock.

If Democrats don't win the majority in the House this week, a lot of Nancy Pelosi's party members have stated they expect her to retire. She has been the House Democrats' leader for 20 years.

If Democrats lose the lower house following the widely anticipated midterm elections on November 8, the 82-year-old House Speaker has been the subject of growing political rumor.

Nancy Pelosi pledged in 2018 to serve just a four-year term as House speaker, but she hasn't made an official announcement on her future in leadership or politics. Pelosi is predicted to triumph handily in her reelection contest against Republican John Dennis in California's 11th Congressional District on Tuesday night, as per NY Post.
