University Of Chicago Student, Nicholas Barnes, Found Dead In Dorm Room

The body of a University of Chicago student was found on Saturday after other students reported a foul smell, the New York Daily News reported.

Nicholas Barnes, 20, was discovered face-down on the floor of his room in the school's International House. Though investigators are unsure of when he died or how long he was in the room, records show his key card to get into the building was last used on Feb. 7.

However, some students said they don't always use the card to get in and out of the building, so it is possible that the records don't really show the last time he entered his room.

An autopsy report was scheduled for Sunday and authorities are waiting to receive toxicology reports. According to the Cook County coroner, foul play is not expected.

Many students expressed concern over the incident, wondering why Barnes wasn't found sooner.

"I don't understand how the people that live next door, and the people who were responsible for his well-being could have not seen that he has been gone for a week," Jordan Ginsburg, who lives in the dorm, told ABC News.

"It's uncomfortable," added another student, Ryo Atnei. "I can't believe no one noticed."

"Just mostly confused and shocked that this could have been going on since February 7th and we had no idea," said student Madeline Kowalski.

Barnes, who was a junior at the school, was a Pittsburgh native majoring in Germanic Studies. He studied abroad in Vienna in 2012 and was also involved with the student magazine, Sliced Bread, according to a university statement.

"Nick will be painfully missed. He was an excellent student, admired by faculty and peers alike," Susan Art, the dean of students, said.
