President of Türkiye Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned the participants of the G-20 Summit that a global rice crisis is coming soon due to the instability of fertilizer production. This was the warning given at the summit as the potash supply around the world is threatened by sanctions against Russia, which must be corrected accordingly in Indonesia.
Impending Global Rice Crisis
Last Tuesday, the Turkish leader told every leader attending the summit to improve the availability of fertilizers to stave off a probable food crisis in 2023. He warned that without action to improve it, starving nations would face a food crisis unlike any other, reported Anadolu.
Furthermore, to succeed, steps must be taken to remove any difficulty-causing barriers and provide the necessary support. He stressed that the Russian grain given by Moscow should be transported to where it is needed most and indicated that African nations should be the first recipients, not western nations, Regarding the food crisis management, Türkiye is doing its part to contribute to the energy security of the region, including Europe, noted TRT World.
He further stressed that Ankara is constantly putting into action all that should be done to improve energy security in the region.
Bloc's Participation in the Istanbul Grain Deal
Ankara asks the members of the European Union to exert efforts to sustain the Istanbul grain deal, citing Yenisafak.
Last Tuesday, Türkiye clarified that its participation is critical if the Black Sea grain trade continues to prevent a global crisis caused by fertilizer production.
A closed-door meeting was conducted with French President Emmanuel Macron at the G-20 summit held in Bali, Indonesia. The topic of the discussion was bilateral relations and developments in the region.
Erdogan made it clear after the shutdown of the grain corridor, which was almost defunct due to the alleged actions of Kyiv and the UK against the Russian Baltic fleet, if it hadn't been for Türkiye's efforts to persuade Putin to continue, according to the country's Communications Directorate.
The Black Sea Grain Deal
Participants in this crucial agreement are Istanbul, Moscow, and the United Nations on July 22. The grain is supposed to restart exports from three Black Sea ports in Ukraine. It was stopped when the Ukrainian conflict began in February. All concerned parties are trying to get an extension of the expected deal on November 19.
Russia has to be convinced after the actions of Ukraine jeopardized the deal, but Erdogan is trying to prevail to export more Russian grain and fertilizers to suffering countries that need them most.
Erdogan called on Macron to also urge Greece to engage in a dialogue without any deceptions.Improved collaboration between Ankara and Paris in defense, energy, and trade is the focus of mutual interest. Macron gave his condolences over the terror attack last Sunday by the YPG/PKK terror group.
Türkiye told the G-20 nations that a global crisis is unfurling and fertilizer production should be boosted to stop causing food instability.
