Hunter Biden Probe: Democrats Decry Republicans' 'Misuse of Power' as GOP Starts Investigation Against POTUS' Son

Republicans on Thursday welcomed intentions by new GOP committee chairmen to look into Hunter Biden, while Democrats criticized the spotlight on the president's son and claimed it was improper.

Senator Jim Comer R-Ky., together with Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, announced the upcoming investigations during a news conference on Thursday morning. Jordan will lead the Judiciary Committee in the new Congress, while Comer will take over as chair of the House Oversight Committee.

Republicans Seek to Start Investigating Hunter Biden

RRepublicans have become upset with Democratic senators' reluctance to launch investigations of Joe Biden's son, who is presently under scrutiny by the Delaware US attorney for his financial transactions, during the past two years.

Per Fox News, Comer and Jordan stated on Tuesday that the investigations by their committees will go beyond Hunter Biden and concentrate on any potential involvement by the president. Comer and Jordan will have subpoena authority, which will be crucial to congressional investigations. Thus, they will be able to compel the testimony of witnesses and the delivery of evidence to their committees.

However, they are not the first Republicans to sound the alarm about Hunter Biden's past and business dealings. Since early 2021, attempts to investigate Hunter Biden in the Senate have been led by Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, the leading member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Republicans announced their promises to look into the president and his family, including Joe Biden's son Hunter, who became a target on the campaign trail for his business deals with China and the Ukraine, hours after they were proclaimed the winners of the House of Representatives.

However, the White House said that the Republicans, who will be in charge of the House's inquiry panels the next year, were out for "political revenge."

The New York Times reported that Democrats, under the leadership of activist David Brock, have established Facts First USA: a $5 million a year "SWAT team" to counter Republican congressional investigations, including on matters that "may be too personal or delicate for the White House to be responding or to even be seen as directing a response" - an apparent reference to Hunter Biden.

Republicans claimed that President Joe Biden was involved in his son Hunter Biden's contentious foreign business deals, which purportedly span 50 different nations, in a wide-ranging news conference that was attended by GOP legislators who will serve on the House oversight committee next year.

The president has consistently denied knowledge of and involvement in his son's foreign business deals, some of which are under federal investigation. Republicans regularly claimed throughout the 2022 election that if they won back control, they would launch an investigation into the Bidens. The probes will probably continue into 2024, when the next presidential election's campaigning will start. Joe Biden has declared his intention to seek reelection.

Hunter Biden Business Dealings

On Thursday, Rep. James Comer alleged that President Joe Biden served as the "head of the board" for his family's business activities and even asserted that the White House had spent more than $250,000 to discredit news about Hunter Biden. The lawmakers promised to release a report outlining their inquiry and the evidence they have found so far, much of which appears to be the testimony of whistleblowers.

When reports verified the contents of a laptop hard drive allegedly owned by the president's lone surviving son, it revealed the worrying extent of Hunter Biden's business connections in China and Ukraine.

Despite having no prior expertise in the sector, he was paid big bucks while serving on the board of the Ukrainian energy business Burisma when his father was vice president and heading a coalition to fight corruption there. In emails found on the laptop, Hunter Biden is also shown talking with colleagues about the start of a business agreement in China. In one email about stock interests, 10% is reserved "for the big gu," as per Daily Mail.
