In a press release Friday, Groupon, the deal-of-the-day website announced a President's Day weekend discount of $10 off $40, all in honor of "President Alexander Hamilton, undeniably one of our greatest presidents and most widely recognized for establishing the country's financial system," except Hamilton was never president, CNN reported.
Contrary to what the online coupon company claims, Alexander Hamilton was never a U.S. president, according to CNN. Hamilton appears on the $10 bill and was the first treasury secretary, but he never got elected to the White House.
Hamilton is credited with laying the foundation of the U.S. financial system, CNN reported.
When people suggested Groupon's promotion was wrong, it responded through its Twitter account: "Joke? We'd never joke about saving $10! #AllKindsOfSerious"
Twitter user @carmstrong07 was not convinced, and said: "Gee whiz, it's almost as if @Groupon did something ridiculous to get everyone online talking about them," CNN reported.
"We're shocked by this implication! Shocked!" the company replied in response.
The press release also said "President Hamilton's famous saying, "nobody expects to trust his body overmuch after the age of fifty," is just as awkward as their promo code for President's Day: "10OFF40LOCAL."
Groupon has not issued a correction, according to CNN.
