Former United States President Donald Trump drew few GOP rebukes after calling for the termination of the Constitution in a Truth Social post.
The Republican businessman's latest gaffe comes after his announcement last month of running for the 2024 presidential elections. He argued that the massive fraud allegedly seen during the 2020 elections called for the termination of all "rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution."
Termination of the Constitution
On Sunday, incoming House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries described Trump's words as strange and extreme. The Democrat added that Republicans will have to make a choice on whether or not to continue embracing Trump's anti-Democratic views.
Jeffries noted that GOP lawmakers will have to address their issues with the former president and decide whether they want to break from Trump and regain some sense of reasonableness or continue to support the Republican businessman's extremism.
Trump, who was the first president to be impeached twice and whose term ended with a violent storming of Capitol Hill, faces several escalating criminal investigations. These include some that could lead to indictments, as per the Associated Press.
The investigations include the probe into classified documents that were found within Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate and the state and federal inquiries into the former president's alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential race.
The top Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, Rep. Mike Turner of Ohio, when asked about Trump's comments, said that he "vehemently" disagrees and condemned the statements. The official added that the remarks should be a factor as Republicans decide who to support during the 2024 presidential race.
According to CNN, on Saturday, White House spokesman Andrew Bates said that Trump's remarks were "anathema to the soul of our nation." He added that the former president's statements should be universally condemned.

The official added that one cannot simply love America only when one wins, noting that the Constitution is a sacrosanct document that, for more than two centuries, has guaranteed that freedom and the rule of law prevail.
Furthermore, Bates said that the American Constitution brought the American people together regardless of the party that they support as well as elected leaders to uphold it. Furthermore, Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, who is an outspoken critic of the former president, denounced his Truth Social post.
Cheney, who is the vice chair of the House Select Committee investigating the events of the Capitol Hill riot, added that with Trump's latest remarks, no honest person can continue to deny that the Republican businessman is an enemy of the Constitution.
On the other hand, Republican Ohio Rep. Dave Joyce, the chair of the Republican Governance Group, which is a centrist group in the House, said that Trump's latest remarks were not a deal-breaker for the 2024 presidential race.
After being pressed during an interview, Joyce said that Trump's statement should be taken in context but noted that it would not stop him from supporting the former president if he wins the GOP presidential nomination, ABC News reported.
