Nike Shoes: Designer Tinker Hatfield Hints at ‘Back to the Future’ Self-Tying Sneakers for 2015

Nike designer Tinker Hatfield announced that 2015 will be the year of self-tying sneaker. While at the Jordan Brand's Flight Lab in New Orleans, Hatfield told Sole Collector that sneaker fanatics will see "Power Laces" next year.

"Are we gonna see power laces in 2015 To that, I say YES!" he said.

Hatfield didn't' say whether the self-tying sneakers will be an updated version of Nike's 2011 Nike Mag or a completely different product. Three years ago, Nike released the first "Back to the Future" inspired high-top modeled after Marty McFly's kicks in the second film.

The company made only 1,500 models and sold them on eBay. A total of $6 million was raised from the sales of the sneaker which went to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which hopes to help find a cure for Parkinson's Disease.

At the time sneaker fans, "Back to the Future" enthusiasts and celebrities all loved the limited-edition high-top but one thing was missing: they didn't self-lace like McFly's. According to the Daily Mail, there has been rumors for a while that Nike was developing a self-lacing sneaker since 2010 when the company applied for a patent for "automatically lacing trainers."

"The automatic lacing system provides a set of straps that can be automatically opened and closed to switch between a loosened and tightened position of the upper," the patent read, the Daily Mail reports. "The article further includes an automatic ankle cinching system that is configured to automatically adjust an ankle portion of the upper."

Blake Bevin, a San Francisco-based inventor, has already come up with her own version of self-tying shoe which she said "will tide you over until Nike comes out with something more polished."

Bevin's prototype has a sensor fitted to a Nike high-top sneaker that activates when a person steps into the shoe.
