A lawyer for a US elementary school teacher, who was shot by a 6-year-old pupil, said her client plans to sue the school district because administrators had disregarded several warnings about the threat.

Attorney Diane Toscano said that on January 6, instructor Abigail Zwerner and other staff members at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, alerted school officials three times that the kid could have a firearm and was posing a danger to others, as per a report published by Yahoo! News.

Zwerner was shot and wounded, but she was able to survive.

Toscano said that the 25-year-old teacher informed school authorities that the unidentified pupil had threatened to hurt another student that morning, "but the school administration could not be bothered."

An hour later, another instructor informed the school officials that the child had brought a gun to campus but didn't see it in his backpack and could have it in his pockets, per AP News.

Then, according to a third teacher, another pupil reportedly confessed while sobbing that he had seen the gun and had been frightened by it.

The pupil was not searched by school personnel.

Victim Recovering at Home

Toscano has stated her intention to file suit on behalf of Zwerner.

Toscano referred to Zwerner as "the best of us" since she was a committed educator, who had to face the unimaginable when she was shot deliberately by a 6-year-old pupil "in front of her first-grade class while teaching."

Toscano noted that the bullet is dangerously stuck in Zwerner's body, and she is currently "in between surgeries and physical therapy appointments with a career in question." The lawyer added that Zwerner is recovering at home.

Newport News Schools refused to comment on Zwerner's attorney's accusations, citing the school division's ongoing probe and new administration.
