BREAKING NEWS: Active Michigan State University Shooter Prompts Shelter-in-Place Order

On Monday night, shots were fired on the campus of Michigan State University, according to officials, who issued a "secure-in-place" order for students and faculty.

MSU police said on Twitter that shots were fired near Berkey Hall on the East Lansing campus.

"Please secure-in-place immediately. Police are active on scene," the message stated. It was initially unclear whether anyone was wounded.

The warning stated, "Run means evacuate away from danger if you can do so safely, Hide means secure-in-place, and Fight means defend yourself if you have no other choice."

University police reported that shots had been fired near Berkey Hall and advised anyone in the area to take cover immediately, as per NBC News.

Approximately 45 minutes later, investigators reported they were hunting for a suspect on foot. University administrators tweeted at 9:25 p.m., "Community members on and off campus must continue to hide in place."

Not long later, authorities received reports of a second gunshot at IM East, resulting in several injuries.

It was initially unclear whether anyone was wounded. Campus police would say only that they were responding and investigating. Students on campus stated on social media that they hid or barricaded themselves as authorities dispersed.

At 8:40 p.m., police issued a shelter-in-place order, stating that shots were fired near Berkey Hall on the northern campus border. At 9:16 p.m., the suspect was still on foot, and another gunfire was reported at IM East, a campus gym.

Initially, police stated that the incident occurred at Berkey Hall, which houses the College of Social Science on the northern edge of campus. State troopers with guns were spotted urging students and teachers to remain inside. According to Fox News, Michigan State University has around 50,000 students located in East Lansing.

According to early scanner recordings, police discovered numerous victims in two separate Berkey Hall classrooms. Some individuals attempted to "escape via a window," a dispatcher stated on the recording.

A police officer stated there might be four or five victims on the audio from the scanner.

In the initial scanner reports, which are accessible on Broadcastify, cops were instructed to report to Berkey Hall. "Firing in progress in Berkey Hall. Currently, there are several victims," the officer informed the operator.

On the scanner, an officer reported that numerous individuals had been shot, that the active shooter was in a corridor, and that people had been shot in the classroom.

According to the first scanner audio, one person had been shot in the head and was not breathing. On the police scanner, an officer announced, "Potential gunfire to the west."

A dispatcher reported that persons were shot in two rooms and that the door was barred. They attempted to acquire a description of the suspect. In the commotion of the early reports, initial scanner reports might occasionally conflict or even be incorrect.
