The prosecution in Alex Murdaugh's murder trial rested their case after detailing to the jury the suspect's potential motive in killing his wife and son on June 7, 2021.

They pieced together a detailed timeline that brought four weeks of dramatic testimony to a close. The timeline, 88 pages long, included a revelation about an internet search on Murdaugh's phone.

He was found to have searched for restaurants only a few minutes after he called 911 after finding his wife and son's bodies. In the last four weeks, the jury heard detailed evidence from 61 prosecution witnesses. With the last few, the entire case was brought together.

Some of the new revelations in the case included the suspect's plea for money from his bank manager only a few days before the death of his wife and son. It was also found that the victims, Maggie and Paul, discovered Murdaugh's stash of opioids. The defendant also called 911 only 20 seconds after the discovery of the bodies despite claiming that he checked their pulses and tried to turn his son over, as per the Independent.

A SLED agent who pieced together a timeline from many data sources gave a bombshell testimony regarding the case. He followed a gripping recreation of the horrific killings by a crime scene expert.

Furthermore, the jury heard about the so-called "roadside shooting," where the suspect confessed to orchestrating an allegedly failed assassination attempt to kill himself. Shortly before the court adjourned for the holiday weekend, the defense began presenting its case to authorities.

The Murdaugh double murder trial was seen as controversial and eventful after the court was, at one time, suspended and attendees evacuated after a bomb threat. The Murdaugh family was also seen to misbehave during the hearing, and there was the discovery of a GoFundMe account seeking financial support for the caregiver of Murdaugh's mother.

Horrific Killings

Sitting at the defense table for 20 days, Murdaugh, a once prominent attorney, appeared sometimes angry and at other times sneered at the prosecution. During the trial, the prosecution detailed the horrific fate that the victims suffered, where 300 Blackout rounds destroyed the suspect's wife's organs, and his son's brain landed at his feet, according to Greenville Online.

But at other times, the defendant could be seen as strategic, similar to when he was an attorney, and would sometimes laugh with his defense team, seemingly jovial. On top of the murder charges, Murdaugh is facing financial charges as his bloodline is facing allegations of stealing.

Jurors in the case also heard from forensic pathologist Dr. Ellen Riemer, who used poster boards with male and female diagrams. She detailed to the panel the wounds discovered on Maggie and Paul as she was the one who performed autopsies on both of the victims' bodies.

The medical expert argued that Paul could have survived the initial gunshot wound to his chest and could have lived had he received proper medical treatment. But the second shot, which targeted the victim's head, was fatal, said WMBF News.
