March has arrived, so many Americans are planning travels for spring break. Ahead of the busy travel season, the US Department of State warns against traveling to some tourist areas, particularly in Mexico.
Last month, the State Department issued a Level 4 "do not travel" advisory for various regions of Mexico. As of March 9, most of these warnings are still in effect. This includes the state of Guerrero owing to violence and five states related to crime and kidnapping: Colima, Michoacan, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas (where two Americans were murdered last month), and Zacatecas.
Places to Avoid During Spring Break
The State Department has issued a Level 3 travel warning for seven additional Mexican states: Baja California, Chihuahua, Durango, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Morelos, and Sonora. If you visit prominent tourist areas such as Cancun or the Riviera Maya (top destinations for 2023 according to AAA), the government advises you to "exercise heightened vigilance."
Whether you are considering spring break travel to Mexico or somewhere else, it is essential to conduct research. AAA's Senior Vice President of Travel, Paula Twidale, tells Nexstar. Twidale recommends staying in a resort for people who wish to travel to Mexico, but even this comes with concerns.
Twidale emphasized preparing ahead and studying State Department advisories online before traveling, adding that various places within a state or country may be more dangerous than others.
For instance, while the state of Quintana Roo is on a Level 2 alert, there are no restrictions in popular tourist destinations such as Cancun, Cozumel, and the Riviera Maya. Nonetheless, the agency advises tourists to "exercise heightened situational awareness after nightfall in downtown Cancun, Tulum, and Playa del Carmen, and to stick to well-lit pedestrian streets and tourist zones."
Iran, Afghanistan, Yemen, Libya, Venezuela, Ukraine, and Russia are other nations without travel warnings. According to The Hill, individuals contemplating visits to Europe, including the United Kingdom and Sweden, are advised to exercise heightened vigilance due to terrorist fears.
Certain European nations are included in the State Department's "Level 1: Take Normal Precautions" advisory. This includes the Czech Republic, Greece, Switzerland, Portugal, and Iceland. Canada, our northern neighbors, Australia, Bermuda, Barbados, the Cayman Islands, Fiji, and New Zealand are also under a standard advisory.
Before traveling to Mexico, US residents are urged to register with an embassy or consulate before traveling to Mexico, according to the Texas agency. The advice follows the abduction of four Americans in the Mexican city of Matamoros earlier this month.
Reportedly coming for medical tourism, the Americans were taken after being trapped in the crossfire between competing cartel gangs. Two were repatriated to the United States, while two were discovered dead. Moreover, a Mexican onlooker was slain.
One of the cartels in Matamoros has apologized for the murders and turned up the persons they believe are guilty to the authorities. In Mexico, about 500 Americans and tens of thousands of Mexicans remain missing, as per NPR.

Spring Break Trip Tips
Spring break is a popular time for families to take a break from their normal routine and go on vacation. The costs involved with a trip may pile up very quickly if you do not properly plan your finances.
Each year, spring break holidays are taken at prominent tourist places such as Destin, Florida; Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Los Angeles, Miami Beach, Florida; the Bahamas; and others. But, if you still need to reserve a hotel or transportation, it is essential to conduct research. Runners brace against the cold and snow during a four-mile race.
When you consider a trip, it may sound like a good time but rapidly become costly. The financial component of what you can realistically buy is a crucial consideration.
Kara Hitchens, the Public Affairs Manager for AAA, asserts that budgeting should be noticed while planning a holiday. Tae Winston, a Dayton businesswoman, states that she could not take a vacation in 2022 due to her hectic schedule.
Per WDTN via MSN, Winston is one of the people who have decided to travel to Florida for vacation, but she has planned her trip intelligently. Those who wish to arrange a vacation may take advantage of last-minute offers or save money by utilizing their loyalty, rewards, or travel points to ease the burden on their wallets.
