Kelly Clarkson talks candid about parenting following a divorce. Since her divorce from Brandon Blackstock, the 'Since U Been Gone' singer said on Monday's edition of the 'Angie Martinez IRL' podcast that she checks in with her children, River Rose Blackstock, 8, and Remington Alexander Blackstock, 6, every night.
Clarkson stated that communicating with her children is essential since they experience "huge feelings" and "huge emotions." This is not the first time that Clarkson has discussed her divorce.
Kelly Clarkson's Children Wish She and Ex-Husband Live Together
According to USA Today, Kelly Clarkson filed for divorce from husband and manager Brandon Blackstock in June 2020, citing irreconcilable differences, following seven years of marriage.
And she has divulged portions of the procedure throughout the years. During an appearance on the Today show in September 2020, she described her life as "a bit of dumpster."
The divorce proceedings between Kelly Clarkson and Brandon Blackstock were hampered by legal conflicts, including a property dispute, a labor disagreement over Clarkson's management fees under Blackstock's business, and a custody fight over their two children. In November 2020, Clarkson was given primary custody of the children.
Per Metro, she added that every evening they set aside a specific time for her children to express their emotions, and if they are sad, she asks what she can do to help.
Kelly Clarkson disclosed, "Sometimes they'll say, especially in the past two years, and it kills me and I want them to be honest, so I don't ever say, "Oh god, don't tell me that," but a lot of times they'd say, "You know, I'm just so sad. I wish mommy and daddy were in the same house."

Kelly Clarkson also stated that she could empathize with what her children were experiencing since she too was a child of divorce; her parents divorced when she was six years old.
During the same interview, the singer ostensibly ruled out future weddings when she stated, "As a child, I endured a couple of divorces in my own family."
The Miss Independent singer stated that she strives to strike a balance between tone and tenor when discussing difficult topics with her children. Clarkson stated that with her life experience, she "will not be marrying again in the future."
Per Mirror, Kelly Clarkson and Brandon Blackstock divorce was finalized in March 2022. She changed her married surname immediately after the divorce was formally acknowledged.
According to court papers, "There being no objection, the name change petition is approved. It has been signed and filed. The petitioner's name is shortened to KELLY BRIANNE from KELLY BRIANNE CLARKSON."
Kelly Clarkson requested to alter her legal name in February of last year, apparently stating that she wanted to go by her first and middle name because it "better truly portrays who [she] is."
